Regarding murder trials and the idiocy of the American public
Edited on Wed Jun-29-11 01:45 PM by Cyrano
I'm vaguely aware that the media is giving extensive coverage to some woman who is now on trial for killing someone. And the only reason I'm aware of even this tidbit of information is because of posts here and coverage elsewhere.

This feeble minded crap all started with the O.J. trial. And the media has found a goldmine in the number of feeble minded people who will pay attention to it.

Then again, perhaps it's some kind of morality play, or soap opera. After all, I guess it beats paying attention to the lunacy going on in our federal and state governments.

Nonetheless, I can't but help see it as proof of the dumbing down of the American public.

1. What "feeble-minded crap"? Widespread coverage and attention being paid to murder cases?
Edited on Wed Jun-29-11 01:45 PM by Brickbat
No, it started a lot further back than OJ.

2. Yep. But the O.J. coverage turned it into a 24/7 obsession.

3. It goes way back further than OJ..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roscoe_Arbuckle#The_scandal

Arbuckle's trial was a major media event; exaggerated and sensationalized stories in William Randolph Hearst's nationwide newspaper chain damaged his career. The story was fueled by yellow journalism, with the newspapers portraying him as a gross lecher who used his weight to overpower innocent girls. In reality, Arbuckle was a good natured man who was so shy with women that he was regarded by those who knew him as, "the most chaste man in pictures".<2> Hearst was gratified by the Arbuckle scandal, and later said that it had "sold more newspapers than any event since the sinking of the RMS Lusitania."<19> The resulting scandal destroyed Arbuckle's career and his personal life. Morality groups called for Arbuckle to be sentenced to death, and studio executives ordered Arbuckle's industry friends (whose careers they controlled) not to publicly speak up for him. Charlie Chaplin was in England at the time; Buster Keaton did make a public statement in support of Arbuckle; film actor William S. Hart, who had never worked with Arbuckle, made public statements which presumed that Arbuckle was guilty.

4. Well said and I for one could not agree more.
Plus I could really care less about most of these "law and order" sagas. Fits right in with the dumbing down of the American public, and validates my notion that critical thinking is history.

5. Actually it started before OJ
sensational court cases are like a one a decade event starting in the 1900s.

Of course Court TV went under, so perhaps there is not that MUCH interest.

9. They didn't go under
They changed their name to TruTV and they still regularly show trial coverage during the daytime on weekdays. Best Defense w/ Jami Floyd was my favorite show on that channel when I had cable.

6. I call it the soap-operafication of the news.
Edited on Wed Jun-29-11 02:38 PM by kenny blankenship
(because for "network" TV news, the decline began after CNN went live 24hrs a day. The existence of 24hr news broadcasting meant that, for much of the day, a nationwide "news" program was now airing opposite the usual shite of daytime television: soap operas, interview shows. The unintended consequence or intended consequence is that news began to fall in tone and seriousness to the level of its rival "entertainments".)

Along with the Who Shot J.R.? plot, there's also the damsel-in-distress plot, also known as pretty white girl goes missing. I expect that Future News will often feature long running characters who suddenly develop amnesia.

"Good Evening My Fellow Americans. As most of you know, I have developed amnesia and have no memory of how I got here. I don't know who I am or what I stand for; and I'm terrified that you'll find out."

These lurid stories, like the Anthony trial, may rate a mention in national news, but the 24x7 circus that surrounds them degrades the "news" and everyone who can still bear to watch it.

14. Hey, kenny blankenship. I love your post.
The "soap-operafication of the news" should become a classic. The "quote" under Obama's picture is wonderful.

Your post is "with it," clever, and more than appreciated by anyone who still has a working brain.

I would have typed LOL, but it was insufficient to cover your wit.

7. Yep
It's so much worse now with the proliferation of the 24-hour news cycle. Imagine what the situation would have been regarding Lindbergh's baby had CNN existed at the time!

12. Well aren't you just so fuckin' superior. Lol.
By the way, bragging about your ignorance of a subject is a BAD way to introduce your "you're all stupid but me" tirade.

13. OK. Got it.
I follow some murder cases in the news, so I am feeble minded. You don't, which means you aren't.

Please list what interests you so that I can label it "feeble minded crap" and call you feeble minded for paying attention to it.

Thank you.

15. Hey Now ... I follow crime stories
Read "In Cold Blood" as a child (by the feeble minded Truman Capote) and got hooked on the true crime genre. So what?

Following trials is just true crime in real time to me.
