Jack's family actually had two cows. The mom gave one to Jack and one to Melvin, the brother of Jack you never heard about.
Jack got, what at first seemed valueless, "magic beans."
Melvin got less than a handful of pinto beans. The beans were not magical and did not grow some beanstalk to the sky. They didn't feed the family either, and they weren't even enough to give a person gas.

You know why you never heard about Melvin? It wasn't because he embarrassed the family so much they didn't want him in the story.

No, he just lost the negotiations to be included in the story.

That was his argument, couched with a lot of hemming and hawing. I thought it was exceptionally weak. It was a bit Clintonesque, actually.
