And I'm optimistic that it is happening. Obama and the Dems have alternatives if they have the spines to use them.

22. I'm so sick of that. It's never been an issue of lacking spine
It's always been an issue of what can pass in Congress. There is no special kung-fu "spine" maneuver that changes parliamentary rules.

39. And before people bring up LBJ and FDR...
... they had majorities 2 to 3 times the size of what Obama had even in 2009-2010 -- and with all that, they didn't do as good a job keeping their own caucuses together as Obama did.

the majorities he had actually had a lot of southern Democrats which were like Republicans at the time and they opposed the Civil Rights Act. With all the said, I'm not a big fan of LBJ.

43. A greater percentage of Republicans voted for the civil rights act than Democrats
Edited on Wed Jun-29-11 05:27 PM by Recursion
But that was back when we had two parties and, distinct from that, two political ideologies in this country. That was also when the idea of a southern Republican was absurd, and New England was still the base of the party.

And if he doesn't cave, you can thank the pressure the base has been putting on him since the Bush tax cut debacle in late 2010.

We've gotta keep the pressure on him. This is much too important.

but to be relieved, I want to see the end result. I've disagreed with the end result of negotiations too much in the past. It's better to have some short term trouble with no debt ceiling raise than to make the wrong decisions long term for our country.

62. Yes
I do feel the pressure of his base forced him to remove 30,000 troops on Afghanistan over the next year. I don't think Obama would have otherwise. He was all about expanding the war in Afghanistan.

I also believe that criticism from his base has caused him to take a more forceful stand in the debt ceiling talks than he otherwise would have. He saw the backlash that happened after he caved on the Bush tax cuts.

The base just has to keep the pressure on him to prevent further concessions to the GOP.

Obama hasn't ended the wars yet so we have to keep the pressure on him.

The base disappoints me, having failed to use their influence to pressure Obama to end the wars already.

The base is going overboard here. As if they have some magical powers. In that case, why are they any Republicans in office? Why hasn't the base pressured Lieberman to agree to a public option? Why didn't the base pressure Obama into repealing DOMA already?

Why does Obama only get one or two years, while the base gets to take its time?

He obviously knows what needs to be done if he can articulate it so well. The only problem--we've seen him articulate these kinds of issues before, only to cave when it mattered.

Example 1:
OBAMA: "What I have done — and this is unprecedented, by the way, no administration's done this before — is I've said to each agency, don't just look at current regulations or don't just look at future regulations, regulations that we're proposing, let's go backwards and look at regulations that are already on the books, and if they don't make sense, let's get rid of them. And we are in the process of doing that, and we've already identified changes that could potentially save billions of dollars for companies over the next several years."

THE FACTS: Plenty of other presidents have gone on the hunt for needless federal regulations.

Clinton gave the job of "reinventing government" to his vice president, Gore, who wielded the hammer on David Letterman's "Late Show" in 1993 to demonstrate silly federal rules on ashtray safety. Clinton signed an executive order directing agencies to eliminate half of all internal regulations, and a companion order taking aim at regulations that affect people outside of government.
