LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Two Democratic incumbents representing southeast Michigan in the U.S. House would be tossed into the same district for the 2012 election under a redistricting plan approved on Wednesday by the Republican-led Michigan Senate and headed to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.
The measure approved by a 25-13, mostly party line vote would put U.S. Reps. Sander Levin of Royal Oak and Gary Peters of Oakland County's Bloomfield Township in the same district.
In a separate vote, the Senate approved new proposed boundaries for districts in the 38-member state Senate and the 110-member state House. The plans already have been approved by the Republican-led Michigan House.
Court challenges are possible as Democrats are opposed to the plans and say Republicans are trying to protect their own incumbents while possibly violating federal protections for minority voters.
