John Lennon: NOT a Closet Republican
In what turned out to be Lennon’s last interview, with RKO radio the afternoon of the day he was shot, he talked about “the opening up of the sixties.” He said “Maybe in the sixties we were naïve and like children and later everyone when back to their rooms and said, ‘we didn’t get a wonderful world of flowers and peace.… the world is a nasty horrible place because it didn’t give use everything we cried for.’ Right? Crying for it wasn’t enough.

“The thing the sixties did was show us the possibility and the responsibility that we all had. It wasn’t the answer. It just gave us a glimpse of the possibility.”

That interview was his last. Six hours later he was killed.

Fred Seaman tried to cash in on his Lennon connection with an earlier book, published twenty years ago. That one has been forgotten. This story will be too.

1. His earlier slanders and crimes against John and Yoko
lead to a judgement against him, he had to return stolen items, pay damages and make a public apology. He's an untrustworthy monger of gossip and slander.

3. Either way he's been dead for 30 years
I mean Republicans of the 70s and modern Republicans are totally different. Even if he ever said something nice about Reagan, Reagan today would be considered too liberal for the Republican party. Which is why Republicans ignore actual things Reagan did like sign gun control legislation and raise taxes. Some of Lennon's political stances would seem modern today, but others would seem completely foreign as the society has so transformed from the 60s and 70s. Many of the causes Lennon believe in exist today but the battle lines have moved.

14. Very true
Consider that it would have led to PR and probably legal problems had Brian Epstein been openly out of the closet.

4. I already rec'd your OP, but it obviously needs a kick, too.
I see at least two threads on this page where some people are buying this horseshit.

John Lennon was my contemporary. Those who are falling for this slander by that lying asshole, thief, and publicity whore, Fred Seaman, are either ignorant idiots or assholes themselves.

5. You say you want a revolution,

well, you know,
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution,
well, you know,
We all want to change the world

But when you talk about destruction,
Don't you know that you can count me out
You say you got a real solution,
well, you know,
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution,
well, you know,

We're doing what we can
But when you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
You say you'll change the constitution,
well, you know,
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution,
well, you know,
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao,
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow

8. JL found the power of love and music to bring people together
and work for tolerance and peace.

The warmongers feared and confronted this power.

Longing:

"It's been a long long long time,
How could I ever have lost you
When I loved you.

It took a long long long time
Now I'm so happy I found you
How I love you

So many tears I was searching,
So many tears I was wasting, oh. Oh--

Now I can see you, be you
How can I ever misplace you
How I want you
Oh I love you
You know that I need you.
Ooh I love you."
-Harrison

9. This is just more of "teh stupid"...
As scarletwoman said, I too am Lennon's contemporary and his life and music have been real inspirations to me and many others. When every word that came out of the man's mouth, whether in song or in speech, was a profession of progressive ideals, anyone's interpretation of his philosophies and politics as even vaguely resembling "Republican" is a monstrous ~~FAIL~~.

This shows utter and complete ignorance on the part of the author... or let me be more specific, WILLFUL IGNORANCE!

13. Thank you so much for posting this
What I felt was that a Reagan Republican would likely have been kicked out by Yoko. Though she rarely speaks "politics", when she does it for things like peace - even after JL died.
