Terror crime rate increases 35 percent in Russia

MOSCOW, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The terror crime rate in Russia grew by about one third in the first five months of this year, the Russian Investigations Committee said Thursday.

Alexander Bastrykin, the committee leader, told a meeting of the Committee Bureau that more than 300 terror crimes were registered during the five months. That, Bastrykin said, was a 35-percent increase over the same period last year.

He noted that the extremist crime rate increased by 16 percent.

"These (extremist) crimes present the most serious danger to our citizens, the society and the country. It is a primary goal of investigators and operative services to make our people feel secure," he was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
