So it's 1:45 am
I'm sitting in my room after getting home from work, and watching Rachel, and reading DU. I live in a low income apartment with my 84 year old mother. I'm sitting here with the window open and the blinds open because it's so damn hot that I need the blinds open for a possibility of a breeze. Some young kid walks up to my window, and knocks on it. He says he wants to talk to me outside. I ask him why can't we talk here? Then he tells me that there are cops at my door and I go to my door and nobody is there.

When I realize this, I heard a noise and the next thing I know the little shit kicked in the screen, and stole my weed. Luckily, it was cheap weed, but it was almost all I have. I called security, but there wasn't much that could be done. And my window doesn't lock, and I usually sleep with the window open.
I just couldn't believe he actually did that. We need to move.

1. How awful for you!
I can see how you'd no longer be comfortable there... and concerned for your mother. Isn't there a way to install a lock?

6. Thank you
Yes I am concerned. I know I shouldn't have smoked weed with the blinds open, but it's 1:45 am. And I turn my back when I do. I shouldn't have believed him when he said cops were at my door. I heard no knocking, but I went to check anyway. I haven't found too many senior living apartments that are somewhat cheap here in Bakersfield Ca. But I will be looking tomorrow for sure.

11. I would imagine that there'd be a lot of senior housing in the area.
Even here in NY, serious snow country, new ones are springing up all the time, but some do appear to be expensive, like those next to golf courses. My grandmother retired to a very nice place, but it was in NC.

But there must be a way to install better locks, like a deadbolt on the door and a locks on the windows, plus blinds. I also assume that nobody's around at that hour, but I live in a more rural area. Good luck and stay safe...

18. We really want to move
We wanted to move before this happened anyway. It's too noisy here, (kids) and music is loud at times. I call security when it vibrates the walls. But our lease is up in September. I was willing to put up with the rest till this. We never expected wine and roses here, seeing as how it is a low income housing apartment. We have a security screen door and a dead bolt for both doors. I will have to buy window locks. I really like having the window open at night, but now since the punk fixed it, I can at least lock it. Now all I have to do is try and get some sleep. Thanks again for your warm thoughts.

2. I live in a similar neighborhood with shady people all around. I hide all my valuables from view.
After several car breakins and vandalizing I got super careful about even leaving change in my car's cup holder thingy.

10. Thank you
Well it's an apartment and we live on the bottom floor because my mom can't do stairs. The window sits like 2 foot from the ground.

4. How did the kid know where the weed was? If you were smoking out an open window
You better be glad that the kid was the one who came to the window and not a cop.

Install some burglar bars if you are worried about people climbing through your open window

7. I had it on my desk
We've lived here since February, so even though it's low income, I haven't had any trouble except for that loud Boom Boom music. I just didn't think about it. We live in an apartment, we can't install bars here. I really wasn't worried about people climbing through the window before. I try to see the good in people. It just didn't sink in that that is what he was after.

8. Why?
The kid actually kicked in my screen and took my prescription bottle of weed. I may have been careless in the place that I placed the weed, or perhaps my smoking it. But I try and be discreet about it.

12. Update sort of
I used to work graveyard, and one day while I was trying to sleep some kids were playing near my window, and their ball hit it hard enough that I couldn't lock it after that. But I wasn't worried for the most part. Anyway, the shit that kicked in my screen this morning somehow unjammed the window enough, that it locks now. LOL! I feel a little better. Now all I need is for the apartment management to repair the screen.

14. You should have reported that he broke in and stole a plastic bag...
..that you used to store "stuff" in? Breaking and entering is a crime, no matter what is stolen. :-)

17. Yes it is a crime
And I should have used better judgment I suppose. But I trust people for the most part, so I fell for it. I figured maybe someone saw me smoking and called the police and they were at my door. But now that I have a prescription, I would be able to explain it. So I didn't fear the "cops" LOL! I'm trying to make light of this. I will report it to management tomorrow, because we need to move before our lease is up after this. My mom is 84 and I just started a job nights 3:00pm-11:30pm so now she and I will worry a bit more till we move. I am hoping to find cheap senior living. Luckily tomorrow I have off so I can look for a place for us in a senior community. To call the police would put it on record, maybe even a piece in the newspaper police log that I cannot afford with my new job.
