The President "Playing chess" "Rope-a-dope" and other nonsense
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 06:08 AM by SHRED
I deeply resent the President playing word games with Medicare and Social Security.
What does he mean Social Security checks may not go out August 3rd?
Is SS solvent for the next 25 years or not? WTF?

The fact that Obama allowed Medicare, and even Social Security, to be subject matters when it comes to the debt ceiling and deficit topics is an outrage.
He chose, and continues to choose, to name them instead of drawing the line sand a while back and refuse to discuss them.

Why is this okay with so-called "progressives"?

It's not okay with me.

2. Obama is playing the game.
They said they want cuts. Obama first said this was all bullshit. They said it again. Obama said, OK I'll play along. Here's 3 trillion in cuts which is even more than what you asked for. Republicans got excited that they might get away with something. Then Obama said "here's 1 trillion in tax hikes" too. It's a $4 trillion deal. Take it or leave it. Considering the republicans weren't serious players, they are leaving it which is a huge miscalculation on their part.

Obama said "you want cuts. I'll give you f***ing cuts." Now republicans are saying "just kidding."

So it is okay...

...in your estimation to play high stakes poker with our social safety net insurance programs?

17. Yes
Republicans voted just a few months ago for a medicare change they knew wouldn't pass. Do you remember the stunt when a few dems voted with them and it would have passed? They all changed their votes. The republicans aren't serious and Obama is pointing that out.

In my opinion the Democratic Party should get back to it's roots and quit playing political games with these two programs.
It unnerves people for no good reason.

Every single Democrat in office at any level needs to be firm about SS and Medicare being non-negotiable...but alas that egg is broken. That wall has been breached.
How much stronger in the eyes of Americans would it have been if Dems stood firm in their resolve to leave these programs off the table and vote as one to protect them?

Nope, instead we get the games as you describe.

13. Now that SS/Medicare are a pawn, they will be in play in every game that follows. Is that going to
"strengthen these programs for the future" in this political environment? Do you really think so?

6. unfortunately, he's "playing" much more than "word games" WRT our social safety net.

BTW - he hasn't just "allowed" it (putting SS on the table), he practically *forced* it on the table (as anyone who has researched the issue probably knows).

18. I feel like I'm in a car and my spouse is swerving the car all over the road at 80 mpg to get the
kids in the back to shut up. It might work, but it sure changes the way I feel about my spouse.

And then I've got a bunch of friends saying, "Well, what do you expect? You've got to get those kids to shut up somehow!" and some are cheering my spouse on, saying it's "spine time" and how great it is that there's finally some action being taken around here.

20. It works like this...
as I had to explain the obvious to some others on DU as well...

If the government defaults, then government services are cut. That means the office of SS gets closed down. That means no checks are issued.
