Perry says those who oppose his prayer summit are "intolerant"
http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/07/perry-says-those-who-oppose-hi.html

Gov. Rick Perry responded today to a federal lawsuit targeting his Christian prayer summit, saying he's going forward with the day-long event despite some claims that it violates the separation of church and state. "Maybe people would want to lock me up," Perry said on an American Family Association radio show. "I think about those who talk about Christian faith as being intolerant. Isn't it just the height of intolerance to say you can't gather together in public and pray to our God?" The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group, has filed suit against the Aug. 6 gathering at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Perry says his prayer summit is aimed at getting God's help dealing with the economic and moral problems besetting "our troubled nation." The Mississippi-based American Family Association is paying for the event. During the broadcast, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council told Perry that opponents want to stop the event because they fear that God hears Christian prayers. "You don't hear much about the Muslims. You don't hear much when it's the Buddhists or whatever. I think the reason is there are those who are very concerned that the prayers will be heard and that things will happen. And that's what happens with Christians come together and pray."

1. Perry is actually intolerant of a non-biased secular government and country
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 11:54 AM by fascisthunter
it's time for some in the media to point this out, because it is the religious rights agenda to snuff out all other religious and non-religious institutions. This man is actively using tax money to proselytize his religious views.

2. I wonder if he'd feel intolerant about having a 2x4 shoved up his wimpy ass.
Yeah, their prayers are heard - that will be $100, thank you for coming.

14. You are lumping a few to many groups together and calling them
Christians. Denominations guarantee that we agree on very few issues. As far as I know my church has never considered itself oppressed in the entire 200+ of its existence in the USA but it is obvious that you consider yourself oppressed.

19. Oppression? Great let's talk about the oppression that results from Religious Wars, such as
the invasion and occupation of Iraq that resulted in the oppression of several 10s of thousands of Iraqi children and babies to death.

Groups such as Citizens for Responsibility & Ethics in Washington (CREW) have documentation on their website listing INTENSE "Christian" lobbying in the WH right up to and for some months after March 19, 2003.

Tell me it's impossible for SaintCo to sell its vote to the highest bidder.

7. Good Hair's summit is aimed at dealing with the moral problems of goddess worship in New York Harbor
They'll pray for God to chop down the Statue of Liberty.

Now what type of intolerant finks would oppose that?

;-)

12. I choose to throw up.
:puke:

It's NOT funny, so I can't laugh.
And it's NOT painful, so I can't cry.

It IS disgusting, though, so I'll just THROW UP

10. Wow. If he, as a private citizen, wanted to do this, I would have no issue with it.
The problem is when he does it as an elected official. What an idiot.

13. I wonder how much he would tolerate Muslim prayers in school?
Or having his kids start the day with a few "Hail Mary's". Or some chanting.

Why don't we all just agree on a nice Quaker silence? Nice way to settle kids in and get them mentally to transition into a day of learning. Works for adult Friends before we meet for business, and works for kids in Friends schools. That way everyone can pray their own way (or just settle down a little if they aren't pray-ers) without imposing their own brand of religion on the minority.

21. Perry has a right to ask for a prayer summit.
Rick Perry, the individual, that is. Rick Perry, acting in his capacity as the Governor of Texas, should not be doing what he is doing because of the separation of church and state.

Rick Perry is doing this in the manner that he is doing it because he is already campaigning for the Republican nomination for President. And that is a sick use of his faith.

I heard on CNN yesterday that the total amount that Rick and Anita Perry have "tithed" during the last two years is $90.00.

Oh, and by the way, I'm a Christian.

elected governor cannot use his state position to sponsor such an event.
