The Larimer County Republican Party shouldn't have to pay campaign finance fines because it was the victim of criminal actions by its former chairman, the party treasurer said in a waiver request to the secretary of state.
"The LCRP funds allegedly taken and used by the former chair were donations from Republicans in Larimer County to the LCRP made in 2009 and 2010. Now, those very same Republicans would be those looked to by the party for the funds to pay whatever fines your office levies. There is something wrong with that," Treasurer Steve Miller wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Scott Gessler.
Former party Chairman Larry Carillo was arrested last week on a charge of theft between $1,000 and $20,000, a fourth-degree felony that carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison and a $500,000 bond. He is free on $10,000 bond; no court date has been set.
