Cordray is Obama's choice to lead Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Sunday, July 17, 2011 10:00 AM
BY JESSICA WEHRMAN AND JACK TORRY

The Columbus Dispatch

"Richard Cordray has spent his career advocating for middle class families, from his tenure as Ohio's Attorney General, to his most recent role as heading up the enforcement division at the (bureau) and looking out for ordinary people in our financial system," Obama said.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, called the selection of Cordray a "great move. There's no question of Rich's qualifications." He predicted the Senate will likely confirm Cordray for the post "unless they get to be hyper-partisan. My only fear is Republicans don't think we should have consumer protection rules." The Cordray selection places pressure on Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who has voiced objections about some of the powers of a new agency. Brown said, "I fully expect Rob Portman to support Rich Cordray."

Warren, who hand-picked Cordray to serve in the agency shortly after his loss in last November's elections, expressed support for his selection. "Rich has always had my strong support because he is tough and he is smart-and that's exactly the combination this new agency needs," she said. "He was one of the first senior leaders I recruited for the agency, and his work and commitment have made it clear that he will make a stellar director."

2. As one who made some noise about the apparent ditching of Warren,
let me applaud this appointment. It is truly refreshing to see what appears to be a strong, good-faith appointment here.

:applause:

12. What Ruby up there said...I trust Mrs. Warren's judgement in this matter.
Good to see that the President does, as well.

9. Well, he did win an election to the AG seat in Ohio
So, unlike Date, has been through a campaign. No idea how rough and tumble it was, but at least he has been through the political process.

and check his Wiki page.

As an early Edwards supporter, I realize this may be the kiss of death, but Cordray has always reminded me of the best side of Edwards.

13. No... It's Just That "Yes, We Can", Has Been Replaced With "Just Say No"
Single Payer - No

Public Option - No

Bulk Buying of Prescription Drugs - No

End the Wars - No

End the Bush Tax Cuts - No

Elizabeth Warren - No

You get the idea...

Appointed her hand picked choice. What more do you want?

20. Seriously, you need to rejoin reality.
Single Payer/Public Option: show me 60 votes for it in the Senate.

End the Wars: apparently you didn't notice that we're leaving Iraq at the end of the year, and starting to pull out of Afghanistan.

End the Bush Tax Cuts: They're still ending.

Elizabeth Warren: she didn't want the job.

11. As a frequent critic of Obama, I applaud this wholeheartedly
More of this, Mr. President. I ,and I'd wager, most of his critics on the left, would like nothing more than to have fewer and fewer reasons to criticize and disagree with him. It is not a game to me, to prove the president's defenders wrong. I want very much for him to do what I believe is in the interests of the middle class and poor, and take no joy in my criticisms and disappointments. I am glad to read this, and am hoping that there will be more presidential actions like this that I can fully support.

15. Cordray Is One Of My Favorite Ohio Democrats
The guy is probably THE star of the Ohio Democratic Party. What an embarrassment it is that he lost the AG job to a weasel like DeWine, but Cordray's got bigger things on the horizon. I predicted several months ago that he would be elected Ohio's Governor in 2014, but I wonder if this new job will prevent him from running.

A smarter guy you won't find (he was a 5-day Jeopardy champion, back when they made you leave after you won 5 times, and he has genius-level intelligence). Plus, his wife was my Evidence professor in Law School, so I know him a little bit. He spent the 4 years he was Attorney General focusing on consumer protection, so this job is going to be right up his alley. I think you're going to like what you see from him. And remember his name, because he's a "fast riser" in the Democratic Party.

17. Good choice! As I said on a more or less duplicate thread, Cordray
is an attack dog on the side of consumers. The Chamber of Commerce hates him. That's a good thing in my book.

18. That's pretty high praise from Elizabeth Warren.
AG Cordray will probably make an excellent director of the CFPB, if he gets there.
