What if?

As much of DU...as well as non-coma America is hoping that the budget/debt talks are passed to the benefit of our Democracy (and the republicans are kicked in the ass) I ask you what do you plan on doing if that is not the case?

1) What if there is a political impasse and the USA goes into default?

2) What if the republicans succeed on cutting SS and medicare as well as gaining permanent tax cuts?


What happens to us next? Where do we go from here?

1. What happens then?
Either the moneyed classes prevail and US becomes a fascist state with a large underclass to prey on,

OR

There is a bloody war that takes down the entire structure (think of the fall of Napoleon) and things start from the bottom, preferably with a bit more compassion.

3. If the debt ceiling is not raised
then the government must be reduced in size immediately by about 50 %.

The tea partiers will be happy. Most Republicans will be happy.

The President will get to choose which 50 % goes and which 50 % stays.

4. We become a third world nation in all the important ways.
Oh, we'll go on posturing militarily for another generation or so, but it will be more and more seen as the fake it is.

All nations fall eventually. It's just our turn now.
