Hey England, want us back?
So, England,

I'm writing to sort of apologize for that whole revolution thing. What were we thinking?

Any country that can at least TRY to bring down the evil empire of Rupert Murdoch AND have universal healthcare AND really cool weddings tells me that we rebels still have a lot to learn from Mother England. Maybe we were a little hasty. I mean taxation without representation is nothing compared to the pickle that we've gotten ourselves into now:

We still pay taxes, but we manage to elect as our representatives only the stupidest and most crooked among us.

We got rid of slavery over a century ago, but still manage to keep our minorities in abject poverty.

We build cars with TV's and seat warmers, but can't manage to make them run on more than about six miles to the gallon. (oops, I forgot. About eight kilometers per liter.)

We get attacked in a brutal act of terrorism, and then invade the wrong country.

We spend mega bazillions of our dollars on our military, and almost nothing on educating our children.

We fill our prisons with pot smokers, and allow child murderers to go free.

Okay, we've done a few things right. I mean, we did produce Jackson Browne and Krispy Kreme. But in so many ways you have managed to outdo us:

You have Sir Sean Connery. We have Tom Cruise.

You have Doctor Who. We have Two and Half Men.

You have "holidays" in France. We have Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale.

You have centuries-old castles and palaces. We have scrape-offs and pop-tops and prairie mansions.

You gave the world the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. We gave the world the Backstreet Boys and Lady Gaga.

Soooo...How about taking us back? I could learn to eat fish and chips. I could even learn to have a monarch now that they've stopped lopping off heads and stuff. Would I have to say "lift" and "flat" and "telly"?

2. if we default, does that mean we'll have to move back home with the Brits?
when many 20 and 30 somethings default on their financial responsibilities, they are often forced to move back in with the folks.

14. And also to be fair...
We gave the world Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Elvis, the electric guitar, deodorant, baseball, and lots of other cool stuff.

The score seems to be evening up a bit...

6. Since my great-grandfather was from there,
I suppose I could go back. Reclaim my hertiage? I know Ireland will grant citizenhip if you can prove an ancestor was from there (can do also), but I don't think the Brits have that.

9. UK - is possible with grandfather link. Beyond that - nope.
If Ireland will grant citizenship based on family in Ireland from a while back, then why not? That gives you right to work and live anywhere in the British Isles.

28. Unfortunately, my grandfather was CONCEIVED in the UK
but was born in the USA a few months after they arrived. Yeah, my great-grandmother was pg with him when they came over on the boat. Yeah, I guess that won't work. Besides, we don't want to get into that "personhood" thing for citizenship anyway.

Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 12:50 PM by KamaAina
the latter two meaning "cigarette" and "courage" respectively.

And remember to put the 'u' in "colour", "favourite", etc., and 's' (not zed, please) in "recognise" and so on.

But it'd be jolly well worth it! The one thing to watch out for is that they have a heavy-duty surveillance state that makes ours look rather puny. :scared:

American exceptionalism is not limited the right nor the left. May as well make a dirty joke about Jesus to a Sunday congregation than imply anything less than "We're #1!" in some American circles... the dogma is the same.

19. She's appealing to patriotism now
She's screwed. She's maligning the press about coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan, and chastising us for even daring to question her judgment since her paper reports on the place where British soldiers have died.

She's a world class prevaricator.

30. Nope. No way.
Many reasons.

1) We can't afford to take on America - we bailed out our banks and nationalised 1/2 of them. we're still trying to pay that bill off.

2) Your military will be cut very significantly, after all got to spend more on healthcare than defence in peacetime.

3) America has lots of things to give: we got Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Disney, McDonalds, Starbucks, Wal Mart fron America.

4) I think most people would set up a revolution since ABC would become BBC and every household would need to pay a TV licence fee. The teabaggers would not like that and can get jailed for watching TV without a licence.

5) In an emergency our island won't accommodate the American population as well as our own.

6) Your taxes *will* go up. The Conservative-led government increased income taxes on the richest (the top band) from 40% to 50%.

7) The United States really is a special place, it has grown up to be something unique. The USA - she is still evolving. This may be a not so pleasant period right now but the only constant in the universe is change. I'd much rather the UK and the USA be friends but not the same "country".

Now the USA might want to do something different: apply for European Union membership.... that would be "interesting".

We have New England clam chowder. They have British food.

We have buffalo wings. They have British food.

We have southern barbecue. They have British food.

We have California farm-to-table cuisine. They have British food.

Also, we tried the whole losing on penalties thing in soccer on Sunday. Didn't much like it.
