CBS: Whistleblower “the books are being cooked, you can see a Fukushima happening here" + much more
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/07/19/earlyshow/main20080633.shtml

Watts Bar, in Spring City, Tenn., is the last nuclear plant to be licensed in the U.S., and a textbook study of the pros and cons of nuclear power. It provides electricity to some 9 million people in seven states, yet is dogged with a long history of safety issues and whistle-blower lawsuits — including six by a 71-year-old great-grandmother named Ann Harris. <...>

What was the turning point in her work? “Basically,” she replied, “the books are being cooked. People are saying things, they swear under oath it’s been done, and it hadn’t been done.”

When Harris refused to sign a multimillion-dollar construction contract riddled with errors, she said, Tennessee Valley Authority executives told her that her career was over. Instead, it sparked a 28-year crusade devoted to preventing a nuclear accident. Harris said, “You can see a Fukushima happening here in the U.S.” So it’s not a matter of ‘if,’ it’s a matter of – “When,” <...>

There have certainly been attempts at intimidation, recrimination and really, threats on your life? Harris responded, “Yes. They ran me off the road. They wired my car for firebombing. They dropped the universal joint out of my car.”

Gov’t allows cows to emit up to 100,000 CPM of radioactivity — Humans would be required to undergo full-body decontamination

‘Colossal blunder’ on radioactive cattle feed / Govt officials admit responsibility for foul-up that let tainted beef enter nation’s food supply, Yomiuri Shimbun, July 17, 2011:

The checks involved electronically measuring the amount of radioactive material on the surface of the animals’ bodies. Shipment is allowed if the detected radioactive emissions are below 100,000 counts per minute. The same amount of radioactive material on a human would require that person to undergo full-body decontamination.

So far, about 12,000 cattle have been subjected to the checks, and all have passed, the agriculture ministry said.

Whistleblower: Los Alamos groundwater monitoring methods are hiding detection of contamination

<...> In 1997 Bob was asked to lead the big project of putting in a network of monitoring wells across the then 47 square mile facility to look at groundwater contamination from laboratory operations. After reviewing the work plan that was written by external contractors and some lab employees, he realized it was incorrect—most well locations needed to be changed and the mud rotary drilling method had to be replaced.

LANL agreed with Bob’s plan to not use the mud rotary method, but then James Bearzi came in as the chief of the New Mexico Environment Department hazardous waste bureau in 1999. Bearzi changed the work plan back to mud rotary. “So I left,” said Bob. “I couldn’t be part of the process that was going to put in more than 30 monitoring wells, each costing over a million dollars, that were going to hide knowledge of contamination from LANL operations.”

I asked, in what way hiding—the wells did not provide the proper kind of data to detect LANL contamination?, to which he responded “that’s right,” and I said that the LANL reports that claim “no contamination is present” would be wrong because the data to begin with is flawed, and he responded “that’s right.” This is what I’d call a contaminated monitoring operation.

Challenging LANL’s groundwater monitoring methodology and operation became a passion for Bob. After all these years of efforts, “Three months ago the New Mexico Environment Department sent LANL a letter stating that the methodology the lab is using (for monitoring of groundwater contamination) cannot ensure that these wells produce reliable data,” Bob proudly told us.

I learned why honest groundwater monitoring is crucial at LANL. Joni told us about the shocking amount of subsurface waste, “At LANL there are at least 21 million cubic feet of toxic, chemical and radioactive waste buried in unlined pits, trenches, and shafts, on mesa tops, and in the canyons, inside the lab property. During the 2011 Las Conchas Fire, the LANL Director informed the media that large amounts of LANL wastes are buried in unknown locations outside LANL property. Those pits inside and outside LANL are not lined. All that waste is moving towards our groundwater, and that’s why groundwater monitoring is so very important, but their monitoring methods are hiding the detection of contamination.” <...>

NRC issues alert over chemical leak at Chicago-area nuke plant — Workers taken away for treatment

A chemical leak at an Illinois nuclear power plant <60 miles southwest of Chicago> run by Exelon Corp. (EXC) has temporarily restricted access to a vital cooling area of the facility <...>

The NRC issued an alert and said it is monitoring the situation <...>

The utility company reported about 330 gallons of the chemical leaked out before being contained. Two plant workers in the area were taken offsite to treat chemical fumes <...>

NRC Adamant: Jaczo No Criminal After Report Shows NRC Chairman "Not Forthcoming"

From Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- The head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission withheld and manipulated information in an effort to stop work on a proposed radioactive waste dump at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, according to an internal investigation.

The inquiry, requested by Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, says that NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko apparently broke no laws. But the report says Jaczko was "not forthcoming" to other commissioners when he decided in October to shut down the technical review of the Energy Department's application for the underground nuclear dump.

But a senior Republican said the report by the NRC's inspector general showed that Jaczko acted improperly.
The report "paints an embarrassing picture of a bully whose use of deceit and manipulation is ruining the integrity of a respected independent regulatory agency," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
"It's quite clear that closer congressional scrutiny of the NRC and the role the Obama administration's agenda has played in Chairman Jaczko' s unilateral actions is warranted and necessary," Issa said. The California congressman's committee is one of three House panels that are investigating Jaczko's role in shutting down work on the Yucca Mountain project.

Fake report helped justify need for atomic energy commission

Documents show that the central government was not upfront from even before moving into nuclear energy in the 1950s and used a fake report in deciding on the administrative structure to be used in the nuclear energy field.

snip

In the report compiled by the mission after its return home, the recommendation was made to establish a commission in Japan to promote and develop nuclear energy. The report stated, "Almost all of the administrative agencies in those nations have taken the form of a commission with many members. It is believed that is done to allow for a sufficient range of opinions to be heard."

snip

While he pointed to the fact that nations such as Britain and France had other agencies overseeing nuclear energy policy, Hori admitted to the false entry in the report about all nations having a commission and said that was the reason why the report strongly recommended that Japan also establish a commission.

Hori also said, "A young bureaucrat became angry at having to write such a lie."

http://www.truth-out.org/node/4265">"Another Kind of Fukushima?" Asks Whistleblower Robert Gilkeson

One day, people will wake-up in this country and realize that it is being run by a gang of murderous, thieving bastards who don't give a shit about our lives. The few who do care, have no power, the rest are too scared of these fuckers to open their mouths - not to mention they don't want to rock the boat and lose those cushy digs they've "earned."

And what's worse, we make it easier for them by claiming that anyone who says such a thing as I just did is some kind of "fruitcake" -- or a "conspiracy theorist" -- as if in so doing that somehow diminishes the truth and reality of what they've been told. Because the vast majority are too frightened themselves to know the truth. Neither are they ready or able to handle that ugly truth. We collectively put our heads in the sand and hope for the best.

So we keep looking for heroes to elect so they'll go into battle and constrain these evil people. Only to see them neutered, compromised and bought and if need be, killed-off. Our heroes always seem to disappoint us. Their clay feet readily and easily exposed once threatened. In the meantime, until we do overcome our fears of them, they'll pick us off one-by-one.

- Thanks granny. Don't take any shit from these fuckers......

And, Chernobyl wasn't really a big problem, either. He goes there a couple times a year and the animal life is coming back and soon everything will be fine.

Sheesh. The saying about how you can't convince anybody of something if their economic livelihood depends on not understanding it, came to mind.

Sigh, even Mensans are sheeple at times. Discouraging!

I don't know what radio he listens to and what TV he watches, but I can guess.

29. These professions have always been hierarchies of power ... keep the system in place ...
which is also what has long ailed our medical system --

members are taught not to think for themselves but to follow the rules --

First thing they should be thinking of us preventive medicine -- and its

the last thing that happens!!

Same with Law and every other profession --

I've heard that 50% of GP's want to be doing something else --

and 50% of those who chose law moved out of the profession --

Someone said of Betty Friedan that had she been trained in the rubrics of

psychotherapy, she would not have had the insight or courage to dismantle

what Freud did to women -- !!

But she did -- she unlaced women from Freud and put him in the garbage can!!

30. Plutonioum has already been detected in Santa Fe drinking water supplies
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 03:37 PM by nc4bo
They knew it in the 90's and confirmed again in '06 after testing SF's water. The concern "now" is this low level is a precursor to a larger, more dangerous radioactive plume being released.

Perhaps I'm mistaken but to me, the following paragraph is basically stating that the ground water has already been contaminated and will soon become much, much worse.

Where are all the alarms, warnings statements of denial we've all come to expect from the I-love-nukers..chirp-chirp.

Info in this post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1487250

The potential for LANL-origin contaminants to reach the Rio Grande River may vary, depending on the underground formations and the types of waste disposed of at each disposal site. The potential may be quite large, as the 2006 Santa Fe Water Quality Report stated a “qualified detection of plutonium-238”was detected in Santa Fe drinking water supplies4. The US DOE has also reported the detection of LANL radionuclides in Santa Fe drinking water since the late 1990s5. Plutonium is the main ingredient in the core or trigger of the nuclear weapons that were developed and produced at LANL, and approximately 423,776 cubic feet (ft3) (12,000 cubic meters (m3)) of plutonium contaminated waste is buried in unlined disposal pits, trenches, and shafts at the LANL site. This early detection of plutonium in Santa Fe drinking water may be an indicator of an approaching plutonium contamination plume in Santa Fe groundwater. And of course, plutonium is only one of many LANL-origin contaminants.

Something horrible is cooking at that site and in the water tables and it's horrifying that the people who would be most effected (hope I used that word right) don't know just how dangerous it could be.

These bastards are going to do their damnedest to cover it all up until the lid does blow off the pot.
