Obama Would Accept Short-Term Debt Limit Deal To Allow Congress Time To Pass A "Grand Bargain"

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said President Barack Obama would accept a short-term extension of the debt limit ceiling, if it allowed Congress time to act on a larger deal.

Obama had opposed any short-term debt ceiling deal, though the change in tune reflects the growing realization that a "big deal" the President demands cannot be completed in full by August 2nd.

Carney maintained that Obama believes that if Congress demonstrated "a willingness to back a big deal," then one could be completed before the deadline. He that Obama would still push a major deficit reduction package after August 2nd.

Carney added that "if House members listen to all their members, not just the ones w/the "loudest voices," they would find support for balanced plan, along the lines of the "Gang of Six" plan introduced yesterday.

All people will care about in a year's time is 1, how many have jobs, 2, how good/secure are those jobs, and 3, how much money do they have in their personal budget. This 'deal' makes all of those things likely worse.

That they make you think you need help dealing with a catastrophic event when there isn't one is the real crime.

56. We have more than a year left
If the economy tanks after this deal, people lose their mortgage deductions and have to pay more while the rich pay less, then a puppet on a stick will beat Obama. And in all 50 states.

Some have said that the real repub candidates (aside from Romney) are waiting to see how bad it gets. They have felt that Obama was unbeatable, but if they start to feel differently, then they may reconsider. Again if things get worse, and Obama owns this 'deal', he will get the blame.

I don't "own" projected future benefits, so, no, there's no theft if the projected benefits wind up increasing by a smaller amount than they would without change.

Is there NOTHING he can do that will get your condemnation?

I've "condemned" Obama often.

ELDERY looking at cuts to SS to give millionaires a tax cut and corporations a tax cut?

There's no millionaire tax cut here. I'm sick of dishonesty about this.

and that is right out of Norquists - starve the beast analogy.

The corporate tax rate would be cut - read it again.

The fact that we borrowed money to pay for the Bush tax cutsand 2 wars is what is driving this deficit. But who does he focus on - 'the 'sacred cows within my own Party' for cuts for what amounts to assurances that there will be 'some revenue'.

"sacred cows" are good for slaughtering in his world I guess.

In my world - people depend upon them to LIVE in a semblance of dignity.

I really do not want to be in Political Party that doesn't see the immorality of what he is doing.

This is histrionic. Social Security benefits are set by statute, for God's sake; it's Congress's job to decide what they are.

Why is an 84 year old distraught? These things phase in over decades.

On the other hand, it's kind of silly the way we're pretending that because we write down the borrowing we'll have to do to redeem the trust fund in a different notebook, that borrowing won't matter. It's sort of like how we don't give "direct military aid" to some countries; it's still military aid because it frees up money to buy military stuff.

14. Yes - but would the House and Senate accept sound meaningful change
Some thing a little less "Tax the Poor to pay for the Wealthy Tax Cuts"

Not that I disagree the Corp Tax code needs a radical revision. Tax Exemptions that Reward Corps for Outsourcing American Jobs and allow Multinational Corporations to CHEAT the Tax Man an estimated $100 Billion annually should be reduced. Additional - I hate to say it - but Grover Norquist AND Bil Clinton are right. America needs to shift to a Territorial Corp Tax System, and if that means eliminating "Tax Loopholes so the companies BOTH large and small could compete on the same level playing field - then so be it. Besides - Small business is the Job Creators - Big Corps Down Size the work force to increase profits for share holders.

But just how the "Gang of 6" figured that personal taxes needed to be overhauled to get America working again is a mystery to me. Not really - yet again it is a HUGE Give Away to the Wealthy Elite which has never proven to generate job growth

47. Actually he wanted to reduce the deficit when he ran for office.
So did Howard Dean and John Kerry.

Regardless, the talk about "big deals" is just that.

62. It's pretty obvious he wants a huge deal. Jay Carney says so right in the OP.

63. What is the term used to describe a leader where
the people below do not understand nor know where he is leading them??

It seems that very few, or if any, really know the intentions of the President.
How can one know if whether to follow or disagree with is the best course of action??

You have to know the path and I can say with complete certainty that no one knows
just by reading the posts on DU. In my book that is no way the correct way to lead.

66. Idiots
An idiot in Athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self-centeredness and concerned almost exclusively with private--as opposed to public--affairs.

Idiocy was the natural state of ignorance into which all persons were born and its opposite, citizenship, was effected through formalized education.

In Athenian democracy, idiots were born and citizens were made through education (although citizenship was also largely hereditary).
