Fukushima city sows sunflower seeds to decontaminate 'hot spot' (JAPAN)
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 10:40 PM by AsahinaKimi
FUKUSHIMA —

Fukushima city officials sowed sunflower seeds Wednesday at a plaza in the city as part of efforts to remove radioactive materials from the soil.

Sunflowers are said to absorb radioactive substances, and the 6,000-square-meter plaza, located on a hillside about 1 kilometer away from the prefectural government offices, is one of the so-called “hot spots” where radiation levels are sporadically higher than other areas.

Botanical cleanup crews: using plants to tackle polluted water and soil - phytoremediation

Rafts with sunflowers growing on them float on a small pond at the Chernobyl nuclear accident site in the Ukraine. No, it's not some touching monument to the 1986 disaster. The plants are helping to clean the pond; their roots dangle in the water to suck up the radionuclides cesium 137 and strontium 90.

This sunflower project is one of many international efforts at phytoremediation-the use of plants to absorb pollutants from air, water, and soil. In the United States, both government agencies and private companies, including Exxon Corp. and DuPont are testing a variety of plants to see if they can do some of the dirty work of cleaning up such pollutants as radioactive material, lead, selenium, and oil. Many plants, it turns out, have a taste for these stubborn contaminants.

1. Don't the plants then become contaminated themselves?
And what do you do with them?

4. LOL's...sad but true. This article sounds so hopeful..but it really only addresses
small portion of that tragic Nuke event. We all hope to find something to deal with this...and if it's hope of Sunflowers...well it gives some joy seeing their color...but, pretty false hope for big Nuclear Devastation like Chernobyl and Fukishima. Sadly. But, hopefully someone will come up with an even better solution that is more natural than burying the waste..and leaving it for decades.

17. I suspected.
;)

Fuu is possessed of her parent's spirits, and is a warrior in her own right. She is not so much a creature of martial weaponry, but one of probability and nature. She helps to define the illusion of 'power' in the world by being a creature of power in her own right, but without the projection of force used by all of those around her.

If you are a 'Fuu', then you are a potent spirit indeed.

Just be careful of vases.

:D
