I called my congress people and told them to vote against Obama's "Grand Bargain"
leave their mitts off of SS and Medicare, and that was a shame the president was fooling people by not prominently mentioning that the deal he wants is to cut those programs. Yet he seemed reasonable so people will call in support of his plan, against their own interest.

Told each and everyone that the whole ordeal makes me angry and disgusted with Democratic Leaders and the Democrats.

2. Thank you. I found the President's speech confusing. I have made no contact
yet with tptb because of the lack of details of the program. I fear that citizens will call in support not knowing the specifics. I'm with you....angry and disgusted.

9. See #8 for what is on the table
The President brought up taxes last night, both raising on the wealthy and closing corporate loopholes, but NONE of the plans on the table have a revenue component.

IMO, by his calling for a "balanced approach" (that none of the 3 plans have) I think he is hoping people will settle for the least odious of the 3, which is Reids as it doesn't touch SS or Medicare/Medicaid.

12. why did you delete what you wrote? so answer the question, if I sound like a tea bagger because I
don't want cuts to SS and Medicare, what does that make you.

I take it from you comment, that you wouldn't sound like one, therefore you must be for cuts to SS and Medicare.

14. I edited it because I wanted too.
It may not have been totally accurate.

But what I will say is that the sooner we do away with the SS charade and make the general fund be the sole provider for the needs of everyone who needs our help, the less politics will be involved in taking care of the People who need our help.

Anywho, sorry to get your hackles up.

5. I'm against it also.
At this point, it's about full blown destruction though. So we may eventually lose them anyway under "austerity" measures. Right now we have to get through the blackmail part of this unscathed.

7. Agreed. Pass a clean bill or go the coin seignorage route.
No economically destructive austerity measures.

8. You do know that isn't on the table, right?
Here are your options:

1. Reid - no cuts to SS/Med
2. Boehner - cuts to SS/Med
3. Ryan - cut SS and eliminate Med

None of them include the revenues from closing loopholes and taxing the rich that Obama wanted.

You may want to make another call into the political American Idol lines to register your vote.

10. According to Berny Sanders, Reid's plan would include that "Super Congress" taking over.
That is when SS/Med will come into play again.

16. This SUper Congress outrage is nonsense
Edited on Tue Jul-26-11 03:08 PM by Inuca
and sorry, no, I am not going to explain why. It's not a great idea, it's probably a rather bad idea, but it's nothing to get so outraged about, and it's nothing particularly new.

And yes, SS and Medicare will be discussed again. They DO face some real problems, Medicare sooner, Ss later. It may be unpleasant, but it's still a FACT. The whole issue is HOW they are going to be handled. In a horrible, distructive way like in the Ryan plan or otherwise. Even the scariest suggestion that I heard so far from the D side, rising the eligibility age for Medicare, is on a completely different planet than the Ryan plan, because it's supposed to be a slow raise to become effective... I forgot exactly when but not for quite some time (20 years? not sure...), and it is true that on an averagae we live longer and stay in good shape until later in our lived (60 is the new 50, etc.).

Edit to add: one more thing, if you take the time to look at some of the information available out there before forming an oppinion, you will see that the "super congress" proposed by Reid, while still a super committee, is very different from what is proposed by Boehner.

He is OK, with the Reid plan, and you can read about that from the poster who responded to you prior on this thread.
