They're showing pics of the Norwegean terrorist - they're professional
shots, very flattering (as opposed to a mug shot). Kind of like family portraits w/out the rest of the family. Just curious, was he an aspiring model or something? I just don't know why someone would have shots like those taken. Do you think he wanted to have the head shots ready for when he did these acts?

I know it's not a big deal and I don't know why it struck me, but it did, so I'll just put it out there to see if anyone else was wondering the same thing.

1. I think he knew he was going to go out with an act like this.
So, he had his picture took. Sort of like Julian Assange. There are a bunch of glam shots of him circulating. If you want to be a celebrity, you need to have some head shots. You want folks to think you look swell, you know.

17. Nope. I've seen many people with political motivations try to
achieve celebrity status. It's pretty common, really. They all had great photos of themselves.

30. Nope. Lots of people seek celebrity.
Celebrity helps political figures by making their message reach more people. Politicians do it all the time. People with extreme political positions do it too. In fact, the key to gathering a large following is to create celebrity status for yourself. The more controversial your position, the more you need celebrity status to gather a hardcore group of followers who will support you when you are being challenged by whomever challenges you.

It's funny that this comment stirred up so much controversy in the thread. As I have said several times, the only link is the quest for celebrity status. That's the reason for the professional photos. Snapshots just don't do the job if you're looking for celebrity status. Look around. The political figures you admire and the ones you hate have that in common. They all have professional photos of themselves, designed to make them look their best.

So with this Norwegian terrorist. So with Julian Assange. So with President Obama, and every other political candidate. It comes with the territory.

36. That's a bit over the top.

To say that Julian Assange, who is a whistleblower, is interested in achieving celebrity status seems, to me, to be a little bit insulting to Julian Assange. And your making that observation does give you the appearance of some -- sour grapes, maybe, some kind of resentment. Maybe it's projection. Ever want a little celebrity yourself? Just asking.

42. You don't think Assange is seeing celebrity status?
I'm certain he is. Not that that's an evil thing to do, but he's definitely on that track. Me? Not at all. I have no ambitions of that nature. Never have had.

14. Actually, I won't complain to the mods. I have no problem
with people knowing that I used to post on Free Republic. I was there trying to convince people that they were wrong. That's why I put that in my profile.

Many DUers have posted on Free Republic for the same reasons I did. I was foolish enough to keep trying. Haven't posted there in five years. What were you doing five years ago.

Someone else may alert on your post, but it won't be me.

38. So, are you saying that people who try to get a message out, --

-- whatever the message, are essentially seeking celebrity?

I posed that question elsewhere, but I think it was in the wrong spot. But it's a real question I wish you would answer.

Can't anyone want to get a message out without wanting to be a celebrity? The two traits certainly can go hand in hand, but I don't believe anyone with a message that they want to communicate is therefore necessarily seeking celebrity.

37. I have to agree with you.

Unfortunately, I have a terrible memory. So now I'm wondering if this poster has impressed me before as being so unconscious, if that's the right word. Maybe I had him mixed up with someone else, but it seems to me at some point I had perceived him as being thoughtful. This has changed my mind. He could be thoughtful, I guess, but he's also at least a little bit unconscious, I think.

I should probably be saying this to him instead of to you. So sorry about this, and Mineral Man, I think you're definitely off base here.

Do you think anyone who tries to get a message out is seeking celebrity for the sake of celebrity?

4. Goes along with his requests to wear a uniform when he appears in
court and to be granted the opportunity to "explain" why he did what he did.

I wonder what sort of "uniform" he was planning on wearing. Sounds like the judge is keeping him incommunicado for a month -- this is NOT what shooter had in mind, I daresay.

5. Absolutely bizarre, I agree. . .
. . .aspiring model. . .bwhahahahaha. . .very funny in this otherwise morbidly sobering story.

I, too, have several questions about this photo:

1-Who selected it from which source?

2-Why not use photo police must have made. . ."mug shot" as you say? Why weren't police approached by press?

3-Doesn't this CONTRIVED PHOTO = CONTRIVED STORY?

I swear, "something stinks in the state of Denmark" (that is, Norway) !

15. From what I was reading this morning, he thinks history is going to
remember him as a hero. The quote was something along the lines of "the attacks were his appetizer, the trial his entree". His lawyer said in a presser that the guy is certifiably nuts and honestly believes that he is triggering what will be a 60 year campaign ending with the eradication of Islam in Europe. He fancies himself the leader of this.

Prolly figured he wouldn't live through the attacks so wanted his pics out there for the history books or a statue, or who knows what else in his demented mind. Would be justice to have the media only use his mug shot for formal reports (like Loughner) so that is the main image people have of him.

20. They were his Facebook pics
The media keeps republishing them because they were the first pics they came across.

I'm telling you, they're old photos. People on FB do that all the time - post profile photos from when they were young and pretty. It's a sideways version of Internet disease:

UK Media had a screen shot of that page the other day.

Included shit like the amount of sleep, what to eat/not eat, exercise the morning of, etc....

It was some seriously warped stuff.

Looks like the Telegraph is using a cropped version from a different angle of view on its pages:

Original of that here:

But yeah, the professional looking pics of a much younger Breivik were clearly placed by him on his newly created social network pages with his intention of that being the image he wanted out there.
