Americans ‘Disgusted’ as Politicians Bicker Over Debt
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-26/americans-are-frustrated-as-politicians-fail-to-compromise-in-debt-talks.html

The inability of Congress and President Barack Obama to reach a deal on raising the national debt ceiling leaves retired Air Force pilot Phil Pignataro filled with feelings, none of them good.

“All the negative emotions you can think of I pretty much have when I see that there’s no compromise and they’re willing to ruin the economy,” said Pignataro, a 65-year-old who lives in Algonquin, Illinois. “For better or for worse, my retirement is all tied up in the government.”

Polls and interviews conducted over the past two days show Pignataro is among Americans growing disenchanted by and disconnected from congressional leaders and Obama, even as they face a personal economic reckoning.

If Aug. 2 passes with no deal, the government won’t have money to pay monthly Social Security checks, veterans’ benefits and contracts with businesses, President Barack Obama said in a televised address yesterday. Interest rates on credit cards, mortgages and car loans would skyrocket, Obama said.

1. I called Durbin's office yesterday, before I even knew
there would be a speech. I left my usual message about the debt ceiling.

Then I called my Congressman today. He is one of the worst of the partisan repubbies. I got a recording, saying to call another number if it was a dire emergency. I figured that it WAS and IS a dire emergency, so I called, and spoke to an aide. I let her know how I felt about the repubbie posturing and greed. I did not call names. I told her how angry we were out here, and how upset all my neighbors are.

I live in a repub district, but I hope my asshat Congressman received many more angry calls.

3. I hear you. I finally got through to McConnel (no, luckily he is not
my senator, but I'm still stuck with teahadist Ron Johnson).

I basically asked him to quit saying the American people were with him and the Republicans on this. We are NOT.

And I told him the country will be holding the Republicans to blame. His 'brand' is toast, IOW.

2. This entire affair is one big fuckup
In the middle of a continuing deep recession (for the bottom 90% anyway) having a juvenile food fight over who can slash the most from our social programs is a sign to most rational people that DC has no idea what the rest of the country wants or needs.

4. Yes, I also told McConnell to get out of the beltway.
(I should have said to take his head out of his ...well, I didn't want to be rude.)
