11. Did you expect anyone to buy that?
I'll tell you what happened. You heard that Rep Clyburn said that Truman had done it so you assumed that it must be true and decided to make an OP about it. Being unable to back it up yourself you tried bluster instead... claiming that it was others' responsibility to look it up themselves.

Of course... it's hard to use the word "precedent" in a post and then reject requests to... you know... actually provide a precedent?

Unfortunately for your OP, Truman did no such thing (and Clyburn didn't claim that he did). The reporting was... shall we say... inadequate?

Clyburn was referring to Truman's use of executive orders to integrate the US military when Congress refused to do so.

The power of the Commander in Chief to exercise that inherent authority is a much easier constitutional argument than a claim that a clause clearly saying that existing debt must be paid really means that Congress can't restrict adding to that debt.

4. If it's your OP
and a poster asks you for a source, I feel it's your obligation to provide them with one.

16. You come with a contention, you quote your source
That is, if you want to be believed.

It's plain, simple and smart.
Not to mention good netiquette.

6. Wrong
The debt ceiling was never raise during the Truman administration. Truman became president on April 12, 1945, nine days after the debt ceiling was increased from $260 billion to $300 billion. The debt limit wasn't raised again until 1954, during the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration, when it went from $275 billion to $281 billion.

9. The 14th amendment has 4 or 5 different clauses.. and I think Truman used it on the military
Edited on Wed Jul-27-11 09:51 PM by Peacetrain
to desegregate it.

But you will have to get someone with more of a constitutional background than me on that one..

But I know he did use it on the military

EDIT TO ADD... the fact it was used.. is Definitely a precedent I would think :hi:

19. It was not explicitly used to desegregate the military
here is the actual executive order he issued - no mention of the 14th

15. You might be confusing the debt limit
with Harry Truman seizing the steel mills. The courts put a stop to it when he tried it.

Your responses #2 and #7 are some of the most feeble attempts at misdirection I've seen on DU. My youngest son is 9 and he'd still be calling bullshit on that kind of tactic.
