So embarrassed by the way a rich kid treated his nanny.
I could not believe the way a kid about my son's age was treating his nanny at the top of Nob Hill tonight. He bossed her around like she was the "common help" and essentially treated her like dirt, all the time he was playing my own son (who knows and likes the nanny). I wanted to give him a talking to, myself. But the last thing I needed was one of San Francisco's elite (I know who the mother is) coming after me for teaching a little common courtesy.

1. Pretty clear family does the same.
Question: 'Class' of family? Years ago, I had a theory about such things.

15. In San Francisco?
Where do you find them? In the endangered species exhibit in the zoo?

Just as likely that he'll grow up to be a limousine liberal, though they are less annoying that Republicans.

17. His mom could've just brought him in from Santa Clara for the day
That's the main 'pug area of the bay, and was once home to the Spiro Agnew military mental hospital.

30. LA is full of them too
if you want real proof that repugs exist in SF, see how they voted on Prop 8. The numbers blew my mind. For it being a gay friendly a city as it is, lots of people voted for 8 in SF.

3. it truly does take a village. and i have never had a problem find a way to let a kid know
that certain behavior is not allowed.

with a smile and eeew, that is ugly. in our house, we treat people respectfully, if we want the same....

or whatever.

a gentle guidance is always ok in my book

16. I worked retail, so I'm not gentle
A "Hey! Knock it off!" usually sends the little thug running away in tears.

"If you want to act like a wild animal, do it outside!" is saved for very special occasions.

However, I don't do either unless I'm provoked to the rump kicking stage and I have a long fuse.

4. Weird that this would be unrecc'd -- perhaps someone from Nob Hill?
Or someone who likewise abuses the help?

Did you stop in at the Fairmont or Mark Hopkins for a stiff drink afterwards?

7. Sounds like a good idea.
We go there because it's the closest playground to our apartment (we live "downhill"). Actually, it's kind of fun because we meet a lot of tourists from all over the world who take their kids to burn off a little steam.

Like what was the age of the kid? I have no idea who the OP is so I naturally have no idea how old his kid is. What good is a comparison like that? Might as well say he was same age as someone's shoe size.

BTW, I did not unrecc this thread. :)

20. Jeez, I don't know -- as a parent, I got the OP. Is the problem DUers without kids?
...for whom taking them out to the park becomes "vague?"

Glad to you hear you weren't the puzzling/phantom unreccer, btw! ;-)

8. Well, let's see
He yelled at her when she pushed my son on the swing (look at ME, look at ME), tried to kick our soccer ball into her face, would not allow her a turn to kick the ball (my son got frustrated, picked up the ball and set in front on her so she could get to kick it), ordered her around. I could go on, but it's too annoying.

13. Randy, why steam off here?
DU isn't a diary. If you saw and experienced an injustice you should have spoken up there. I get what you mean but what good does it do to blow off steam HERE where nobody can rectify anything? *hug*

9. And how would she come after you? Does she have any power to affect your job or your family
relationships?

For what it is worth, I managed an uber posh childrens' clothing store on Sacramento St. two decades ago. I always stepped in when the clueless abused their nannies.

There is nothing wrong with you expressing the fact that when you or your son are around him - treating another person rudely is not acceptable. The kid was showing off.

Sorry, but not intervening as an adult in order to protect your privileged social access allows ...

.. the conduct to become acceptable - you have made it socially acceptable, and you have passed that lesson to your child. It is your child who will now possibly treat the human being as a servant to be used as they please because of your example.

And so goes the arc of progressive history, we move forward one step at a time - we just never step forward in unison.

There are, and still remain, plenty of very low-key and socially acceptable ways in which to exercise your position as the adult parent present to correct unacceptable behavior without it being an issue.

Doing nothing was the only wrong answer.

This can't possibly truly reflect DU, can it? That's why I rarely post. Don't let them get you down. They're always here somewhere.

SOmetimes I have to remind myself that just because someone is a Democrat doesn't mean they are conscious or in any way mature or sensitive. Lots of projection, I guess. Otherwise, I don't understand it.

I don't know why so many folks feel the need to correct other people. The OP is unloading after an unpleasant situation that was indicative of our growing class divide, and she gets piled on here at DU by a bunch of behavior police who must all be absolutely perfect people themselves who have never unloaded when tired or exasperated or put out or any such thing, a bunch of people who ALWAYS behave perfectly and always have the most appropriate and only acceptable response to all situations effortlessly at hand! Blaahhh!

This thread has given me a real case of the yucks. I feel terrible for the OP.

EDITED for word left out.
