McConnell announces intent to FILIBUSTER the Reid bill!
On CSPAN2 just now, I saw Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announce his intent to DILIBUSTER the Reid debt-ceiling bill.

If I heard him correctly, Majority Leader Reid said a filibuster would at best delay Denate action until at least 1 pm Sunday.

McConnell also announced his intent to revive the just-tabled Boehner "balanced budget amendment" bill for debate.

Can you believe this? IMO what McConnell is doing is trying to ENSURE a default on Wednesday, when the Treasury is expected to have only $15 billion on hand to pay $23 billion in Social Security monthly benefit checks.

WHAT'S YOUR OPINION?

Have you seen the FILIBUSTER mentioned on any cable media yet?

10. Which American media would that be? I think if we had CBC in
the USA, we might get the message across.

Otherwise, fat chance, on anything other than the cable channel Current TV

government anyway.

Would that we had had the same tight controls upon our banks that Canada had on HER banks in 2008...none of this mess would be so big.

8. Let him Filibuster the Rethuglican Party right out of existence!
I am convinced no deal can be struck before Tuesday, and that that is what they want to do to America and the world financial markets.

Let them talk to me and the other tens of millions who depend upon our Social Security checks to get through August. Let them ask to be re-elected in November 2012!

Let their Senate and House pensions be shut off, as they face charges of criminal conspiracy to destroy the American government, and life sentences in jail if convicted.

21. McConnell's only posturing for negotiation.
The only leverage he has is to threaten filibuster and to try to keep any republicans for voting the senate bill in. He wants a bone in the bill.

Once he realizes that he can't stop a few republicans from voting on Reid's bill, he'll cave.

I for one can see the logic of Obama's strategy. If we can get a few republicans to vote for Reid's bill while no democrats voted for Boehner's bill, then I think the democrats will then be in the position of doing whatever is necessary, impeachment threats notwithstanding, to do what is necessary to avoid disaster.

29. I don't understand why people here don't get the posturing
that is involved in negotiations. They take every word as confirmation of something when the players are posturing for position.

I for one, and maybe the only one, think that being able to refer to something as "bi-partisan"
is a powerful weapon in today's political climate.

I can't imagine how any business could have gotten done on anything, if Obama fought the way they do like people here keep talking about. Two intransigent sides wolfing at each other getting nothing done. Sometimes when the other guy is the nut, and clearly the republicans are nuts here, you have to be the reasonable one.

I really want them to pass something with some republican votes, even if it's just a few.

38. But, less than 100 hrs before the default deadline, McConnell;s wasting up to 60 hrs
by his filibuster intent declaration. By delaying floor debate and floor compromise on Reid's bill in the Senate, McConnell is suppressing the attraction of Republican Senators to a coalition around the Reid bill, and discouraging House Republicans from voting "YES" on it with 193 House Democrats tomorrow.

A filibuster helps McConnell make sure the Boehner bill is the starting vehicle for any last-ditch compromise. The Boehner bill's constitutional amendment language will be dropped, but will its scheduling of another manufactured debt celing crisis within a few weeks be dropped?

42. Rallying Democratic voters is great. But ditrict gerrymanding means the vast mahority
of Republicans are SAFE in their seats for general elections against Democrats. This was not true at recently as 10 years ago, when HUNDREDs of Congressional Districts were competitive in general elections. But now the main threat to a Republican congressperson's racking up 40 years of re-elections is PRIMARIES against even farther-right candidates within thier own party. Republicans don't need to care what Democratic voters think anymore.

44. The Gerrymandering began and has continued on as GOP went unopposed by Democrats ....
In fact, if you remember Rep. Patricia Schroeder of Colorado -- she tells an

interesting story of how Majority Leader Tip O'Neill and number two guy, Rep. Dick

Gephardt decided NOT to oppose Rep. Newt Gingrich after his first term .....

BECAUSE GINGRICH SUPPORTED SALARY INCREASES FOR CONGRESS!!

Schroeder was shocked -- but shows you where the Democratic Party's minds have been --

and how foolish their decisions!!

And, of course, as GOP power grew, so did their Gerrymandering!!

Like the Democrats might not have suspected that would happen?

40. McConnell anounced his filibuster during the Friday evening news Bermuda Triangle
Most Americans will not hear the word "filibuster", because the next nightly network news is three days away from Fridiay evening, and the filibuster will be "old news" by then.

Washington has a long history of releasing embarrassing reports and other skulduggery on Friday evenings.

39. The republicans want the default and will say "Obama put the country into default". The dumbed
down people in this country will blame it on the President. This is too easy for the republicans. The filibuster by McConnell shows that the republicans control the government. A veto won't solve this one.

43. McConnell (Sat 1:30p): "Let's vote NOW!" The catch? SIXTY votes would be required
to invoke cloture on McCennell's filibuster, rather than a simple Senate majority of 51 on Reid's debt-ceiling bill.

Note there are 53 Democratic Senators!
