What exactly are the Republicans holding out for now?
I've lost track.

Haven't the Democrats met them more than all the way?

And they are still threatening the nation.

What's the sticking point now?

I've lost track.

7. they've kinda boxed themselves in; the ONLY "victory" for them is default
there will be some ignorant extremists who will believe they capitulated no matter what the agreement ends up being unless they "show their resolve" by force obama to miss a payment on SOMETHING first.

i think they figure that no matter what obama does, obama loses. he has to pick some payment to not make, thereby pissing off some constituency. alternatively, he can try something controversial that would give republicans fodder for impeachment buzz (they won't actually impeach him, they just want the "scandal".)

then, shortly after they've shown their willingness to push the country into default, they will come to an agreement, most likely something very similar to the reid plan, but different enough that they can say they got "something extra" because of their "resolve".

they know obama won't miss a payment on social security or interest on treasuries and they think that a temporary delay on a few payments to the lower priority bills won't be a real problem for the government. it's true that this might not result in a downgrade or in noticeably higher interest rates, but you can be damn sure that all government contractor will factor this in to their next bid.

10. They want a smaller government,...
...Less debt, and a balanced budget amendment. They won't agree to tax increases. Basically, they have radically different view of government's proper role.

11. It does seem to keep changing.
Most recently I've heard that many of them are fixating on the inclusion of a BBA in any legislation.

I suspect that's just an excuse. They've been looking for something the Dems will reject so public blame can be shifted away from Repugs, is my current belief. Except for a few who may genuinely want default for one reason or another. Today's spin, heard on NPR earlier, is that the Republicans keep offering things, but the Dems won't compromise at all. Huh.

13. More. There is always more, which is why avarice cannot be negotiated with.
One cannot come to an agreement with a black hole. I place considerable blame on those that insist on not only trying but willfully lending credibility to the bogus premise of the oppositions positions.

Some folks refuse to deal with the opposition they have and stupidly and quite dangerously insisting on dealing with the partners working through disagreements they wish they had.

What do they want? More than they can imagine and everything they can. They want, at bare minimum, unconditional surrender and utter assimilation. Perhaps that would not even be enough, there is always more.

There is ALWAYS more.

Internalize that. We aren't dealing with you. You do not even perceive their shark like appetite and dragon minded hoarding. They want all there is and all there can be and will never be sated and cannot be bargained with. The world is not even an appetizer.
