It's hard to say much about this, with certainty, other than that clearly things have changed a LOT in recent decades...

1. Sounds like a machine that is on the verge of flying apart and scattering pieces everywhere.
It started out sounding like a well-tuned machine, humming along steadily, and since the 80's it's been becoming more frantic and chaotic with every passing year. Stand back, it's going to blow!

4. If you notice, the changes started to occur at the time when
the government was starting to push IRAs and 401(k)s and other instruments to get the majority of the population involved in the stock market. Up until that time, very few ordinary citizens were in the stock market. Take what you will from that.
