in the sense that if a catastrophic blow to the world economy wasn't that much of a trigger, 1.5 trillion in spending cuts won't be either. The bright side is that 1.2 trillion of those are from the Pentagon, and the whole framework will cast any extension of the Bush cuts as deficit-increasing.

That went nowhere, but might have been preferable to the bill that ultimately passed. At least that would have given us the chance to fight another day for a public option.
that saps the Democratic Party's argument that they will protect Medicare. This was to be the 2012 election strategy that would get the House back. If the trigger is pulled, Medicare is whacked.
There goes the best argument the Dems had to fight next year. How silly is that?
