Capital Times editorial: Obama’s deal with ‘nutters’ is bad for America
http://host.madison.com/ct/news/opinion/editorial/article_5db737db-7ed0-5479-9857-d4126a0b6308.html

“Given the choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, people will vote for the real Republican all the time,” said Harry Truman. If the 33rd president was right, then Barack Obama just did himself and his party a world of hurt.

Faced with the threat that tea party-pressured Republicans in the House really would steer the United States toward default, Obama had to do something. But instead of bold action — borrowing a page from Ronald Reagan to demand a straight up-or-down vote on raising the debt ceiling; borrowing a page from Franklin Roosevelt to pledge to use the Constitution to defend the full faith and credit of the United States — the president engaged in inside-the-beltway bargaining of the most dysfunctional sort.

In cutting a deal with Republicans that places Democratic legacy programs — Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — at risk while cutting essential programs for working families and the poor, Obama has positioned himself to the right of where mainstream Republicans such as Howard Baker, Bob Dole and George H.W. Bush used to stand in fights with the fringe elements of their party.

Now the fringe is in charge of the GOP. And Obama is cutting deals to satisfy Republicans that Britain’s banking minister describes as “right-wing nutters.”

1. Medicare cuts are dangerous
they say the deal will not cut benefits to medicare recipients but only payments to providers....

duuuhhhhhhh....

Participation in Medicare is OPTIONAL....providers are not REQUIRED to participate in Medicare...they can simply refuse to accept MEDICARE PATIENTS....AND THEREBY MAKE THE ENTIRE PROGRAM USELESS...

Dentists locally already refuse to accept Medicare...low and moderate income folks cannot get medicare for dental locally and have to travel long distances to get it...what do you think is going to happen when docs who are now getting only 65% of their costs suddenly get only 50% or 40% of their costs?

This isn't going to be pretty

2. Very. Many doctors stopped taking new Medicare patients years ago, because of cuts then. Each cut
makes it harder for Medicare patients to find providers.

3. My spouse works with Medicare
and she corrected me on my figures...medicare generally only reimburses providers to the tune of 35% of thier costs...personally I don't see how they can go much lower without it being pure "pro-bono"

4. Medicare covers very little dental care, unless you have cancer of the jaw or something similar.

Cavities, root canals, etc. -- you are chit out of luck, there never has been any Medicare coverage.

Physician payments have been "squeezed" a lot in recent years, and I don't think any of the proposals were to cut them further. Payments to pharmaceutical companies need to be cut though. The HCReform legislation includes some incentives for primary care physician services.
