IRS Revokes Tax-Exempt Status Of Anti-Gay Hate Group
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 08:27 AM by Ian David
The IRS has revoked the tax-exempt status of the certified anti-gay hate group, Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH). President Peter LaBarbera, 47, founded the group in 1996, according to his website, but took it full time in 2006. The action, which is not subject to an appeal, is permanent, and oddly, was made for a lack of proper paperwork filing.

“The reason for this action is listed by the reporting organization Guidestar as a ‘failure to file a Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N, or 990-PF for 3 consecutive years.’ These forms are required of legitimate non-profit organizations for review by the IRS and the public,” writes David Roberts of Ex-Gay Watch.

“While the current incarnation of AFTAH appears to have been active since 2006, we found only one form 990-EZ on file — for the year 2009 (PDF). In this, total receipts are listed as $110,000, out of which Peter LaBarbera received a salary of $75,000. For perspective, this is approximately the same salary plus benefits claimed by Exodus president Alan Chambers. Exodus lists eleven employees and a million dollar budget.”

Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out, who dubbed LaBarbera “Porno Pete,” wrote in 2009,

“Porno Pete LaBarbera is the voyeuristic anti-gay “activist” who clownishly videotapes gay leather events and bathhouses year-after-year as part of his hands on research. His ostensible goal is to “expose” the real gay agenda. Although, his bizarre obsession with entering this arena reveals more about his own sexual repression than the GLBT community. I mean, what kind of straight dude needs to repeatedly take the same photos each year?

1. So, if he had just filed the forms, people could still write off 'donations' to him?
I'd hold off the celebration.

I would hardly call this a victory of any kind, which is the implication of this post.

A "victory" would have been a ruling from the IRS that from now on, they will not grant tax exempt status to any gay hate groups.

That's not what happened.

The IRS would have been happy to let him continue giving his donors a tax break if he had simply filed some forms? Is that right?

Is anything stopping him from doing the same thing again from the same offices, etc, but just changing the name and filing the forms this time?

2. He might have bigger problems...
If I had been a donor to him any time in the last year, I'd sue him for fraud, since this year's donation will not be tax deductible.
"Payback" (pun intended) maybe the biggest bitch for him yet

3. It's About Time!
It's about time that the IRS yanked AFTAH's tax-exempt status! LaBarbera's outfit has been a year-in year-out gay-bashing operation that has spread its poison far and wide across the right-wing landscape. I hope that some ambitious IRS employee(s) decide to put LaBarbera's outfit and at least some of his donors through some audits. I also hope that their political bosses don't wimp out the way this presidential administration wimped out about investigating and prosecuting the crooks who brought us Dubya and the melt-down of 2008.

:toast:

4. Good news.
Now, if they'd just go after the Roman Catholic Church, the Mormon Church and all other nutso fundy churches responsible for Proposition H8, we may get somewhere.

5. He can write off his closet as a home office.
Sounds like he needs to get laid.
