New Balance struggles as last major athletic shoe brand still manufacturing in US

By Peter Whoriskey, Published: July 28

NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine — At the factory here owned by New Balance, the last major athletic shoe brand to manufacture footwear in the United States, even workers on the shop floor recognize that in purely economic terms, the operation doesn’t make sense.

The company could make far more money if, like Nike and Adidas, it shifted virtually all of these jobs to low-wage countries.
....

Now, however, comes what may be an insurmountable challenge. The Obama administration is negotiating a free-trade agreement with Vietnam and seven other countries, and it is unclear whether the plant can stand up to a flood of shoes from that country, already one of the leading exporters of footwear to the United States.
....

New Balance officials said removing the tariff would also undermine years of efforts at the company’s five New England factories to compete against cheap foreign labor. The plants employ 1,000 workers.

1. By some odd happenstance, I was at their factory store yesterday ...
Unbeknonst to me, it was the last day of a month long sale 25% off everything. The store was packed and the inventory was solid.

Let's hope they stay.

2. Not all NBs are made in the U.S.; if you are interested in buying some, be sure to read the label.

Also, the idea that eliminating tariffs on Vietnamese sneakers will make them cheaper is a goddamn lie. Prices never go down; profits only go up.

I mean, seriously, who anywhere isn't able to afford shoes because of this tariff?

16. The price won't change. NB can boo-hoo about profits and loss-leaders and shut the whole thing down.
Because it's a private company, no one can see the balance sheet and challenge them on it.

People pay a lot for shit shoes not made in USA anyway, and there will not be a price drop once the VFTA goes through. I guarantee it.

3. Free trade = fuck you to workers like these.
Tariffs are important tools of countries to protect & regulate their own economies.

4. That's a shame
When my son was playing football, we ordered online from New Balance every year. For some reason, it was the only company that sold size 13 extra wide rubber cleats.

5. Oooh, and I need some new running shoes
I guess this is the time to buy them.

New Balance and Reebocks are the only ones that fit me well and I prefer New Balance.

6. Only tennis shoes I buy,
And the real kicker is the quality of their shoe is excellent. Something from Nike or Addidas falls apart in six months(I'm hard on tennis shoes). My latest pair is at a year and a half and counting.

12. I just bought a pair of their Made in USA ones.
They're beautiful.

I can never understand this "the company would make more money"--intellectually I get that they only care about their short term bottom line, but if you take jobs out of the US, then people can't afford to buy the fucking shoes--they won't have the wages. They'll have to cut quality on the shoes to make them cheaper, so that people with less money can buy them. Does that never enter into the calculations? You can only flood third world countries with a limited amount of cut-rate crap until the market gets saturated.

14. I know which shoes I'm buying next time I buy shoes
Problem is, I can't afford much more than 20 bucks or so for shoes. I'm going to save up though. And I know they will last me a lot longer than a pair of $20 shoes.
