Kent Conrad Saying Catfood Commission and Gang of 6 Proposals Will be in Super Congress
Great!

Just saw Kent Conrad on MSNBC saying there isn't enough time between now and Thanksgiving to come up with new deficit/debt reduction proposals so they will rely heavily on Fiscal a.k.a. Catfood Commission and Gang of 6 Proposals...anyone still feeling confident?

3. I'm not surprised either. It's just funny that many on DU swore up and down the Catfood Commission
was just smoke and mirrors and 11 dimensional chess or w/e it was.

5. But nothing has been CUT yet!
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 01:08 PM by woo me with science
Why are you even saying these bad things when absolutely NOTHING has been CUT?

And why are you talking about it HERE? You should just write quietly about it in your JOURNAL!

7. We accuse the Republicans of having an echo chamber
which distorts the perception of Republican voters. Here we are doing this same echo chamber thing here at DU. Let's try to be sure we actually know what we're talking about. As of today, this is how it works:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheet-victory-bipartisan-compromise-economy-american-people

?uuid=yO-EzrxQEeCYzBMQCYwsyQ

I've notice that we all (me included) tend to jump to conclusions based upon an interview we've seen or heard coming from a politician or political pundit. Critical thinking requires that we take opinions and quotes from political figures to task if the facts dispute those quotes. Mind you, this most certainly isn't the deal I would have wanted. But, it leaves out the December 2012 expiration of the Bush tax cuts. New revenue could start flowing into the economy as early as January 2013. Question is: will there be a last minute deal keeping tax cuts for the lower 98% and letting the ones for the upper 2% expire? Who knows?

Let's not go off on tangents not based upon known facts. We just frustrate ourselves and make ourselves no different than those in the conservative echo chamber.

13. Why are you completely ignoring the political power of this "Super Congress?"
I'm not going off on a wild tangent, I'm being pretty damn realistic. Kent Conrad is highly reliable (as the Senate Budget Committee Chair) and participant in both Commissions. Those commissions offered entitlements cuts and pretty bad ones. It's not much of a stretch to assume those same cuts will be proposed in November, this time with a mechanism that pretty much ensures some form of them will be passed?

18. I didn't hear a word Conrad said. He has his opinions, but
we have our facts. I would prefer to generate my own personal opinions based upon the available facts, not on the opinions of others.

22. It's wasn't an opinion. It was a fact. Conrad will likely be on this committee
as he is the Senate Budget Chair and he is on every other committee (fiscal and Gang of Six).

The Committee group will look at entitlements. That is a FACT.

17. I'm not. Thing is (if you read what I linked to), you'll
be able to read for yourself that Conrad's words today (which I did not hear) do not bear a resemblance to the actual proposed deal. Medicaid, Veterans and SS are protected via provisions placing them off limits to the commission. Medicare cuts can only be to providers. Please don't listen to other people, particularly politicians. Read the documents for yourself. Otherwise, you'll sound like those tea partiers who we dislike. Remember when Palin told them that there would be death panels? Well, that's how we're responding to this commission idea. The fact is that the commission has strict hands-off limitations about Medicaid, Veterans and SS, and there are limitations on what can be done with Medicare.

23. Quickest way to public option; increased SS benefits for those on low end; increase in wage cap;

big cuts in military; tougher negotiating for pharmaceutical prices; etc.

There are some things we won't like too, but what are our priorities?
