26. 14th! 14th! 14th!
If the teabaggers (or anyone else) kills this, then invoke the 14th and dare the courts to declare that illegal.

5. They have someone from CQ - David Hawkings and he also said
that Boehner was going to speak about 37 minutes ago but is still trying to secure votes.

Reid also has problems with Lee who is trying to slow things down.

3. I think that was
that Boehner doesn't have the Republican votes to get the deal, we'll see how it shakes out but I anticipate a close passage with a pre-arranged number voting from each party.

9. If Boehner needs Democratic votes to pass a bill . . .
Wouldn't it make sense that there would be something in the final product that, odious as it is to Democrats, would make the bill palatable? Like an extension of unemployment benefits? Or the automatic trigger to instigate not only cuts in spending but increases in the tax rate? I'm so old, I remember a time that if you wanted to work out a deal with someone, you got a little and gave a little. What are the Democrats getting in exchange for their votes for this package, since Boehner can't even get his own party to sign off in it?

16. Perhaps you need to read Redstate
they've not stopped yammering about how this bill is a big wet kiss to the liberal wing of the Democratic party. Basically they are pissed that SS and Medicare aren't getting slashed, the shrub tax cuts weren't made permanent and the debt ceiling was raised through 2012. Some of the more whacked out over there are still convinced that if they had of held out they would have achieved a successful amendment to the Constitution mandating a balanced budget.

I think they'll get their votes from the centrists of the democratic party and the least crazy niche in the republican party most notably the Tuesday Group.

I see it as a relatively centrist deal.

20. Okay, the debt ceiling is raised
And all the sane people wanted that. So that's kind of a wash. Anything else the Democrats got? Not eviscerating a program isn't really "getting" something. While seniors and poor folks don't have budget-busting needs, what they do need, they REALLY need. Life-sustaining earned benefits aren't really analogous to a depreciation schedule for private jets that is seven years instead of five.

The Hill has a running whip count at:
It updates as members of the House speak or release statements.

My early prediction is that the leaders on both sides twist enough arms to get it passed.

10. From Kos:
Via Taegan Goddard, ABC's Jonathan Karl says he's been told as many as 100 House Republicans could vote agains the debt deal, meaning Democrats would need to provide as many as 76 votes in order to save the country from default.

11. If not, it's time to invoke the 14th Amendment
It may not pass SCOTUS, but for the time being it's better to ask for forgiveness later than permission now.

Besides, politically, it would be great for Obama to save the day (or at least the global economy) after the teabaggers screw things up.

Why can't he say he has to do it for National Security reasons?

Why can't he say the republikkkans want the US to go the way the USSR went?

What would the teabaggeR$ look like if they scream?

27. Obama Should Invoke The 14th Amendment - Then If It GoesTo SCOTUS....
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 02:06 PM by global1
does anyone really think that they'd be so stupid as to not back Obama up on this. SCOTUS wouldn't want to shoulder the blame for this country going into defaut. The 14th would back SCOTUS into a corner. And if by chance they would rule against Obama on this - they would be exposed to the whole country - just how political they are.

I say vote this so-called compromise down. Let Obama invoke the 14th. Then let the chips fall where they may. I believe the balance of power on this would be with the President.

A bit tongue in cheek but here it is. These people are not going to allow any concessions to Democrats to cloud their victory.
