1. Alter says the Bush tax cuts will expire
Buchanan says they'll use the tax cuts for the 2012 election and ReTHUGS will try to push them through. Buchanan says ReTHUGS will bring back the tax cuts.

9. And Alter was correct.
The decision to allow the Bush tax cuts will be made by Obama, no matter what the outcome of the election.

If he loses, he let's them expire. And the GOP won't be able to reinstate them, the Dems would only need 40 votes to block it.

If Obama wins, the situation is even better. He can let them all expire, and the Senate can write a bill to extend only those for the middle class after the fact, and then challenge the GOP to vote against a middle class tax cut.

18. Fine, except: a middle-class tax cut bill would have to start in the House.
And if the GOP still controls the House, such a bill will not be scheduled for a vote -- so the Senate will have nothing to vote on.

20. I'm pretty sure that both the Senate or the House can craft their own bills.
In fact, the bill put forward today came from the Senate, not the House.

Regardless, once the Bush tax cuts expire, the Dems in the House can ask the question "why won't the GOP members help us cut taxes for the middle class??"

19. the Bush tax cuts are so last week
Now they are about to create a super-Congress to "reform" the tax code. To "reform" it by lowering the top rate even beyond Bush's wildest dream. Obama, damn him to hell, has indicated a willingness to sign off on this, as he praised the gang of six for offering such a plan. Once that gets passed, (and it only takes 7 evil Democratic Senators to pass it - there are already enough evil Republicans to pass it in the House, and the law says it cannot be fillibustered even if there were 40 good Democrats in the Senate.) Once that excrement gets passed, then the Bush tax cuts are moot.

Although that would sort of be a funny flytrap, if it could be arranged. I imagine it like this. Congress passed "tax reform" which eliminates many loopholes (or deductions) and also lowers to top rate to 27%. This would result in a big gain to those at the top. But then December 2012 comes along, and bang, the Bush tax cuts expire. We return to Clinton rates, except now the loopholes are still closed.

Whoops, you didn't see that one coming, did you?

But I don't really believe that the masters of the universe would be caught unprepared like that.

Instead, it looks more and more like we the people are the ones who have been caught unprepared. Unprepared for the hope to be a lie and the change to be for the worse.

22. You are a bit confused.
Let's pretend the committee recommends something, it gets an up or down vote, and then passes it with the 7 or so evil Dems.

Obama can veto that.

Whoops, you missed that. Oh wait ... you've already decided that he hates us all and would just sign it, just like now when he dismantled Social Security and Medicare ... which Whoops, didn't happen as so much of DU predicted.

As for closing the loop-holes, you sound like you are against closing some of the loop holes. Which deductions are you afraid to lose?

24. yes he can (snicker)
BUT, he has already praised the gang of six instead of threatening to veto it. So why should I believe (or hope) that he will do such a thing, to veto "historic bi-partisan reform".

As for the social security cuts, are you denying that Obama offered them, because I thought that was pretty clear.

And as for closing loopholes, I am very much still in favor of that http://journals.democraticunderground.com/hfojvt/151

However, having closed the loopholes, I would compensate the middle class with a higher standard deduction and the making work pay credit. I would absolutely not, not ever, not if a gun was pointed at my head, lower the top rates. Unlike Obama, that Reaganomics bullshit doesn't fly with me.

6. He's an awful human being in looks and deeds
He's clearly nervous about those tax cuts. Love how Alter reminded him that there will still be a 60 vote requirement in the Senate in 2013.

14. Yep, I always find him irritating to look at and to listen to, and his ideas are
deplorable. All in all, not a very pleasant package. Good for Alter to remind him there will still be a 60 vote requirement in the Senate in 2013.

He'll like it there- apparently seeing the light is not something he's interested in anyway. Pat Buchanan defines the word "schmuck."

23. McCain created this screwed up analogy.
You are correct, McCain should have used orcs.

But the orcs did not win.

If they did ... social security would have been slashed, medicare ended, and a balanced budget amendment created to ensure that the government had its hands tied behind its back going forward.

None of which happened.

If anything, the GOP got agreements for cuts that were already planned, and we saved the world from the financial collapse that the orcs really dreamed of.

15. Pat doesn't know his hole from an ass in the ground.

Truth is the bush cuts are being used as a bargaining chip round 2 "if there is no meaningful tax reform".

Weren't supposed to be a next time, until there was. Smoke & mirrors.
