The day after the 2010 midterms, the Republicans were clear as to their goals. and this is how it's going to be until the 2012 elections. The New Deal, the Democrats, and the 95% of the country which isn't rich is going to be attacked again and again by a small, radical group of Republican elected officials who, hatched in the echo chamber of GOPAC, ALEC, AEI and Fox News, can not conceive of a world which does not match the one they've been indoctrinated to believe is true. Anyone who does not hew to their orthodoxy is to be ridiculed, defunded and hounded into silence. Any progressive who doesn't think the Republicans are, literally, out to get you isn't paying attention. The GOP wants you disenfranchised, delegitimized, starving and silent.

Prepare yourselves. This will happen again in September. This will happen again when the Bush tax cuts are to expire. This will happen again at every change the Republicans can find, no matter how small or routine.

time and time again instead of standing and fighting. I hate what the repubs have done and are continuing to do at an ever quicker, more brutal pace, and I hate that no real,sustained and effective opposition to them has existed for 30 years, and this is, once again, worse now than ever. I expect the republicans to be the vile bastards that they are; I still have had this apparently naive expectation that my party's "leadership" would do everything in its power to stop them. Silly, naive me...

but I don't hold their appeasers and those that give their stupidity credence in much higher esteem and am more disappointed in them because they fucking know better and are supposed to be watching out for the people.

Seriously. And I don't mean in a good way. If history is any guide, if people feel like they have nothing to lose, they will strike out en masse. Cutting of our social safety net by the Republicans and the inability of the Democrats to provide true defense for working people will pave the road for greater financial hardship and desperation. And unless something happens, people will strike out. My concern: who will they strike out against? Because again, history has shown us that revolutions are messy, and the targeting tends to be indiscriminate.

went after the disabled, gays, Jews and dissenters. Here I think it will depend on what area of the country they are from. I sat in a sociology class where we were talking about discrimination. Our Professor told us that everyone has someone they "hate" and asked us to think about who in our area of the country it was that most people blamed for all the problems. I was surprised to learn that the answer was so different on a regional basis.

I was also surprised to learn that I was as guilty as anyone else even if my dislike was for a fellow white citizen from a different religion/nationality/economic class.

years will do that to you. I am disappointed in President Obama but I can see where he may have had no choice with these hostage takers. I just wish he would speak out more. I will vote for him in 2012. What I do want to see come out of this is a bigger push to get progressives into congress.
