so apparently Alan Simpson is our ally in this fight?
thats what it seems to be, based on the ODonnell interview with him that I saw. Its us and Simpson against Norquist.

And so what that means is that establishment Democratic media types like Lawrence ODonnell and maybe Al Sharpton will be inviting Simpson on TV to wage the battle against the other side.

Maybe thats a good thing, I dont know. Maybe Simpson is a good ally to have. Maybe its a good use of Democratic-friendly outlets like MSNBC to get our message across.

But can we be a little skeptical about it? Can we think about why we are working with Simpson, and why hes working with us? And why hes saying all these things that sound great to us?

2. What you are seeing is a realignment of the political system
and a reliable republican is no longer in the mainstream of his party.

By the way, if he were 30 years younger he'd change party affiliation like many moderate Republicans did...

Alan Simpson is a conservative - and quite conservative at that. He isn't absolutely crazy, but progressives have little to nothing in common with him.

If Simpson had his way the recommendations of the Cat Food Commission would be the law of the land.

I mention every now and again old-school republicans who growing up I could respect even while disagreeing with their politics. And inevitably people jump down my throat saying that repubs were always crazy and mean and stupid.

Except no, they weren't. Used to be the GOP was populated with lots of people like Simpson. I don't like his politics (though I agree with him here), but I can respect him.
