Tell Republicans to Stop Vacationing and End the FAA Partial Shutdown
http://dccc.org/page/s/faa

House Republicans called it quits and closed shop in Washington without resolving the FAA partial shutdown, leaving thousands of workers on furlough, safety inspectors working without pay, and millions lost in revenue by the day.

Apparently, not even 70,000 workers or costs of $30 million per day can get in the way of House Republicans' vacation. Americans want job creation and deficit reduction, but House Republicans have chosen again to pander to the right-wing.

Sign our petition demanding that House Republicans stop putting their vacation before our safety and economic security.

1. Amazing, isn't it, absolutely amazing. They should be fired for non-performance, hell, they
should be fired just for the 14% approval rating.

3. The House has passed a FAA bill. It is the Senate that has not acted.

6. Not what the bill says and you know it.
Delta had a vote on a union just last year and it was defeated. The House bill requires a majority of employees vote for a union (instead of just a majority of those voting). That is not ideal but I don't think it worth killing the bill. The Senate has not done their job. They should vote it up or down or amend it. They went on recess instead of doing one of those three things. The White House yesterday asked Reid to accept the House bill and initially he said OK but later changed his mind and went on vacation.

8. Why do you think they did that? I'm posting frantically trying
to understand what/why happened. Thanks to this thread I at least now know it was the Senate (I always automatically blame the House) - but why on earth would Reid allow that knowing the consequences?

I heard Randi Rhodes say she feels it's part of the Republicans plot to get as many Americans jobless before the 2012 election. Sounds :tinfoilhat: but totally believe it -- their actions have proven that they're only interested in political gain, not jobs, not the American people.

9. I redally don't understand why they did it.
Especially since the White House urged Reid to accept the House bill and move on. The bill should be voted on one way or the other. Congress is really broken in many respects.

10. I just learned a little more from Mike Malloy, and I've got to
Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 12:07 AM by gateley
say I agree with them not passing it, if he's correct.

Apparently there was a provision in the bill (at the behest of Delta airlines - this is where the union stuff comes in) that anybody NOT voting on the upcoming union vote (and maybe they had it in for all union elections across the board), would be counted as a NO against the union vote.

As Mike Malloy said, let's take it to the next level -- I'm not going to vote for Mitt Romney, so he gets my vote?

So I'm with Reid for not going along with it, such as I understand it. And maybe they just didn't have the heart to duke it out after the Defecit bloodbath.

I'm watching the rerun of Rachel and she's going to cover it (she's always the best, IMO) so maybe I'll learn a little more. If so, I'll report back!

And, now I'm mad at Obama for telling Reid to go along with it!!! That's just WRONG!

ETA: Just learned on Rachel that Obama said he'd veto any bill that came to him with the anti-union provision, so don't know where the "Obama said okay" came from. Okay, so I'm not mad at him any more. I'm sure he'll be happy to know that. :7

11. Obama made the veto comment back in March.
A lot of water under the bridge since then. This is a link to where Reid was going to schedule a vote yesterday. It does not mention the White House but I saw that on CNN or someplace. http://thehill.com/blogs/transportation-report/aviation/175023-senate-may-pass-house-faa-bill-to-end-shutdown

12. Thanks -- it's one hair-pulling issue after another, isn't it?
I've heard a couple of places that Obama told Reid to go with it again, so if that comment was made in March, that explains the discrepancy.

Rachel said all they have to do is vote to extend it (for the umpteenth time). The Republicans are absolutely IMPOSSIBLE! I don't know how Obama keeps from losing it, I swear.

7. What safety issue? Safety critical staff are on the job and being paid, including Air Traffic
Controllers.

That said, the lack of action by the Senate sucks
