Some perspective here please
Say I had a sum of money--around $500k on which I receive monthly checks.

This money is tied up in Wall Street in the form of two different companies in equally divided sums, so I get two different checks in the same amount.

What will happen to this money?

1. Probably nothing.
I don't think the interest payments would change. The value of the underlying investment might change to reflect the interest rate change. This is if the money is in Government Bonds.

The downgrade came about for mostly political reasons, not economic. The United States can make payments on its obligations. If you went to a bank to get a loan and were approved for the amount you requested, but then said, "Oh by the way, if I feel like it I'll stop making my scheduled and promised payments!". What would they think? That's what the republicans did to cause this downgrade.
