In the early days of the Obama campaign here in NH, I was called to a meeting at Obama headquarters. The meeting was called by David Plouffe and included representatives of 12 grassroots groups representing all kinds of interests. Plouffe arrived at the meeting wearing a black shirt and black pants and I remember thinking that he looked more like a priest than a political consultant. He told us that what was going to be different about Obama and his campaign was that it was going to be built from the grassroots up and it was going to all but bypass established political machines and represent the interests of regular folks. He then went around the room and listened to each group outline their issues and concerns. I left that meeting energized and convinced that Obama was going to bring a new, better day to our politics.
Today I am wondering if all that talk more than 2 years ago was BS from the get go or somehow abandoned along the way to the White House and, now, a second term.
