"Must have own transportation." Often you see that in job ads...and yet the job pays low wages.

What's wrong with this picture?

I work in a job where we're looking to hire somebody. P/T, no benes...who must have reliable transportation.

:sigh:

Edited to add: Oh, and pays a whopping $8.00 per hour.

Edited for clarity.

3. It wasn't specifically one ad, but I've heard job ads before that say something similar.

They'll cite a crummy hourly wage, and then say, "Must have own transportation."

8. Oh ok. And yes, you're right. I've seen that. They want it all. And if one has a car...
$8.00/hour doesn't cover even basic survival, and they want a CAR too?

9. And, they assign only a few hours a day so that gas costs aren't covered by wages.
Truly weird.

2. They're looking for somebody
that needs a hobby or supplemental income - to go with a retirement income, a spouses income or another full-time job. Or perhaps a student looking to pick up a little supplemental cash.

4. The New Normal. Most of the jobs that have been created
are in Service Industry which as a rule have the
lower wage jobs. Exception--Nurses and some Med.
Professionals.

We know Big Corporations are making their money
in overseas markets--cheaper labor.

That leaves Small Business and so far it has been
the Service Industry producing the jobs we do get.

High Tech--mixed bag ie, Cisco Systems laying off 13,000

5. This is nothing new. I've been seeing that in ads
for nearly thirty years now, since I was a teenager. Usually it takes the form of "must have reliable transportation". I've always been asked in interviews if I either have my own reliable car or if I had reliable transportation. I think some form of that is actually pretty standard.

In all honesty, look at it from the employer's perspective. You would want to know if the person you're hiring can be dependably relied upon to be able to get to the job. You can't work at a job if you can't even get there in the first place. Of course, I've also heard that question asked even if the person lived within walking distance of the job, which is ridiculous. And bikes seem to be frowned on as a manner of transportation, even though they're more reliable than cars even and they're a perfectly legitimate mode of transportation.

6. I realize it's nothing new. And I realize the employer's position, since

I don't want a co-worker who doesn't show up so others have to cover for them.

At the same time, it doesn't make any sense. How can a person afford a reliable car if they're making such crummy wages? I'd suggest more people get mopeds except that it's so dangerous on our roads...same as with a motorcycle.

7. Delivery drivers.
Don't do it if you need your car for other things, like driving.
