1. Some on the BBC live updates:
2108: Aerial footage is showing what the BBC believes is a large furniture store on a street corner in Croydon completely ablaze.

2104: Peter Truman, a reporter at the Croydon Guardian, tells the BBC most people in Croydon have just gone indoors and shut their doors, and the main reaction is shock.

2058: Aerial footage is now showing several fires burning in Croydon, south London.

3. It looks like the people have had enough of this shit...
in one way or another.

However, the mob is not the future, it is merely the tipping point. It is the moment when people reclaim their power, and real change can only come when that power is used coolly and calmly.

21. This isn't '*the* people', but you're right, it's a mob
It's a few people, and if they want to show they're pissed off at the government, then they should target something to do with government. Occupy government buildings; take over a BBC radio station and broadcast what's wrong, or something like that. This is mainly inchoate rage wanting to strike out, or some thieves looking to take advantage of the situation.

Ask the vast majority of the people at the moment, and they'll be worrying about their homes, or people they know who live in city centres.

6. Having had command of EMS side during a RIOT
FD better be careful... all become targets, you wear a uniform, you are a target.

Once this is over there has to be an understanding of WHY this is happening. As to your friend... STAY INDOORS... really, STAY INDOORS.

23. Didn;t say to hold it
but tipping points are interesting. Usually they are the kind of things we manage to finally see in the rear view mirror.

So when it happens it will not be immediately obvious to anybody.

24. Another example of the Poor working against their own interests.
They burn down their own communities, the only thing that gives them strength.

20. This isn't just about looting its anger at the system
which is corrupt and geared for the rich.

The anger has been growing and growing and sometimes
it only takes something that at other times would not set the fuse to trigger the rage.

I think the Murdoch bullshit showed how corrupt it was as well as the austerity measures, the war, the bullshit wealth disparities it just adds up
until the fuse is lit.

I hope your friends will be OK.

22. Friends and family are OK so far
It's about more than that - you can't show non stop coverage of the Arab spring, cheer them on and discuss the economic side of that struggle and not expect those at home to wonder about the conditions of their lives. I don't condone the burning and looting of property but everyone will be paying attention shortly and what's more there will be construction jobs when the rubble is cleared.
