the "leaked" story about the Obama campaign focusing on Romney is classic Rovian bullshit
Rove is a Romney backer.

He has several goals in planting this story on Politico:

1. Make it appear that the Obama campaign thinks he's the front-runner. This keeps the narrative going that the "smart money" is on Romney.

2. Send the signal to GOP primary voters that Obama is more afraid of Romney than of the rest of the GOP field. The debate one-liners write themselves... "even the Obama campaign knows I am the only one that can beat him.

3. Anticipates the negative attacks that the Obama campaign might try and attempts to neutralize them NOW by getting them out of the way early and making the Obama campaign look petty.

This is all classic Rove bullshit. Remember the debate practice tape of Dubya that mysteriously wound up at Gore's offices? That was no mistake... it was a Rovian trick to make Gore look like a thief and to lower expectations for Bush in the debate.

The Obama campaign didn't say anything to Politico, folks. This is a planted story to get Romney in the news and make Obama look bad.

This kind of crap is going to happen frequently over the next 15 months, so brace yourself.

They don't play the game cleanly.

1. That's what I figured when I wrote an OP asking questions......
Cause the timing.....in terms of the straw poll this week-end,
and unnamed vague sources from Politico (of all news agency),
makes the stench strong in this one.

2. In 2007 the front runners were Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton
Hillary had a mammouth lead in the primary polls and Giuliani ended up winning not a single primary or caucus.

5. Non story
The Republicans will tear apart Romney long before Obama gets a shot. That's why the righteous indignation is hilarious.

7. He likely is the most electable
Outside of someone no one cares about like Palenty or Huntsman. The other candidates are batshit insane.

9. can you tell me what proves "Rove is a Romney backer" ?
I'm not saying it couldn't be true, I just haven't seen any evidence and I would have guessed he'd be behind Perry.

10. Rove and Perry are mortal enemies
Since way back. Some Texas election way back.

American Crossroads, Rove's superPAC, has been supporting Romney.
