Obama paid addtention to the criticism over the past few days
He's addressing many of the jobs/he's not doing anything/Congress should drop everything and go back to Washington/not leading/not being reassuring to the nation/etc in his speech right now

Good speech!

2. it looks good that he's still with us
everyone else seems to have skedaddled, including an incredible 20% of Congress going to Israel.

...as the most cursory trip here through the archives makes clear -- but you can't convince people of it.

A year ago next week, e.g.

4. Don't get excited
It's just a speech...words mean nothing without actions to back them up!

5. So when he uses the "bully pulpit" we should ignore it ... and
on the day after ... we should bitch that he doesn't use the bully pulpit enough.

7. I'm a sucker for hope
and the speech made me feel a bit hopeful that something could be done by him and the administration.

There are times when I feel cynical and hopeless but dangle some hope in front of me and I'll grab it and deal with disappointment later when and if it presents itself.

And... you're right, action is called for and needed NOW!

11. with Obama words are exciting
as he so rarely seems to speak out proactively for progressive/democratic political view points. Given the split congress, staking ground is about the only likely productive thing he can do.

6. I'm really trying not to get cynical, but he talks a good game yet
caves to the teabag terrorists every single time.

I want to support him, I really do, but it's getting harder and harder to have faith in him--especially now he's talking about rich people buying foreclosed houses & renting to us serfs. That's a GREAT idea! What's next--the Company Store?

8. As a golfist, you'd think Obama would appreciate the value of follow through
One lone speech delivered while everyone's out of town hardly constitutes a consistent program, rigorously applied. Particularly when, as we've seen over and over again, when he's back in the thick of things, suddenly all the fine words of August 11 become nothing more than a historical curiosity, as now he has to curry favor with a bunch of people who will never agree with him anyway, and the people who put him in his lofty position can just go hang.

9. I guess what I liked about the speech is that
for the very first time, he actually addressed some of the criticism that been leveled at him. To me that shows that he's responding and not just sitting in an ivory tower above it all. That, in itself, is hopeful to me, and what he laid out sounds reasonable and workable.
