Beverly Hills police blow up screenwriter's laptop, script
Beverly Hills police blow up screenwriter's laptop, script

Beverly Hills police blew up an aspiring screenwriter's laptop and script when investigating a suspicious package Thursday morning on Rodeo Drive.

The screenwriter, who was not identified, apparently left his briefcase -- with the computer and script inside -- unattended at a talent agency office.

Beverly Hills Police Lt. Tony Lee said police, not knowing what was inside the briefcase, detonated it as safety precaution.

Lee said the owner was distraught when he learned what happened to briefcase.

2. I guess that movie would have bombed.
There are many scripts that should have received that treatment.

21. Ooh, you're funny,
Just the thought the guy lost anywhere between six months to several years of work today because he evidently forgot his briefcase is enough to make anyone who writes on any level sick on his behalf.

I have multiple backups of my work, but I know a NYT-bestselling author who almost lost the manuscript of her latest book two or three years ago when someone broke into her house and stole her laptop.

11. If he is too stupid to make a backup he should be a producer not a writer.

12. This really isn't a funny story, guys.
I speak as a writer. Yes, if he doesn't have a backup file somewhere then he made a terrible mistake....But GEEZ! A talent agency assumes that a briefcase forgotten in their office is a BOMB?
Please tell me this story is some kind of newborn urban myth!

17. I hope so too....
I would imagine many people who visit the agency have briefcases or other kind of handbags. One being left behind should not automatically set off a bomb threat. And isn't there some way to test for explosives without detonating something first?

18. Why is it their SOP to blow up anything they cannot identify?
They are lucky it was not full of C-4. Can someone please give these guys/gals a robot or two OR maybe a portable x-ray device? I hear TSA has a firesale on their "haha look at his pecker" full body scanners. Maybe someone could scale them down for briefcase/backpack checks.

19. I'm sick for the guy in question
My work is backed up at home. Twice. I also use an offsite backup. I can only imagine how long he worked on that screenplay. Losing his laptop must have been a significant blow, too, especially if he can't afford to replace it.

22. Sadly I get it, if there is a real terror threat
that is SOP.

Never ever leave things unattended... and in this case, have a back up away from your laptop...

Now here is the problem... in Israel, for example, you know you do not leave things unattended... the population has been educated. That hasn't happened here.

Well before 9.11 we almost called the cops on an abandoned back pack.

26. While I feel a *little* sorry for the guy ...
How much does it take to backup one script? One floppy? A $10 flash drive?

I've had enough equipment failures I can't back everything up regularly, but I do have multiple copies of any irreplacable work.
