Police charge elderly Florida man for vandalizing Florida Progress utility poles
CLEARWATER, Fla. - For years, deputies thought a street gang may be responsible for tagging hundreds of Florida Progress utility poles all over Clearwater and Dunedin. They have now charged a 71-year-old man with the crime.

Charles Wesley was arrested for felony criminal mischief after witnesses told deputies they saw Wesley spray painting power poles with the letters 'SLA' Sunday morning. Deputies say Wesley admitted to spray painting hundreds of poles all over Pinellas County over the past six years.

Investigators initially believed SLA stood for Symbionese Liberation Army, a radical 1970s group that gained fame by kidnapping newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst. Hearst eventually joined the group in robbing a San Francisco bank in 1974.

However, neighbors told deputies that SLA actually stood for Sane People Liberated Army. It's the group Wesley claims will take over the United States after the country falls into financial ruin.

3. Question for her...
Were people worried that SLA was a street gang? Did the cops or local government use the tags for fear propaganda?

4. I am not sure what your point is.

"Did the cops or local government use the tags for fear propaganda?" There is a nutty old man who has been going around spray painting trees FOR SIX YEARS and nobody could find him. Are you suggesting there was something more devious going on.

5. No, for six years person(s) unknown had been tagging poles.
Turns out is was a crazy old man. From the time the tags started to appear until the day before the tagger was caught, what did people think the tags meant?

12. I will ask her next time we talk.
However, she did say that a neighbor that she barely knew came to her door to talk about the evils of abortion, but this nut was female.

13. It may be a silly question.
Rooted in my dark thoughts about how local politicians and neighborhood blowhards talk up gang activity at the slightest provocation to push fear and thus Republican memes. Some folks around my neighborhood do this.

14. Well I agree that fear i s a favorite repug weapon,
but six years is a long time to use the same tactic. On the other hand, they really are a bunch of idiots and with their mentality, anything is possible.

11. because he sounds a little nuts.
the article does not state if he is for this imaginary group or not. Either way, it bizarre behavior and I do not want him living next door to my sister. When people have lost touch with reality, it is a good idea to keep them at arms length.

6. Shouldn't he have been tagging the poles with "SPLA" instead?
And if he's a teabagger (very likely) then he could call himself a Sane People Liberated Army Teabagger (SPLAT!) }(

7. If he is a teabagger, then any misspelling is appropriate.
(If not required)
