Am I the only one that feels this way?
And feels puzzled by how to address it?

I don't think I'm breaking the rules.

I'm not naming names, and I'm not pointing fingers.

And I want to promote free expression, and open discussion.

I don't want to ban everyone that expresses the slightest divergence from the party line, like Free Republic does.

And I realize that I sometimes take a position that is not popular here.

So, I can't really spit out a blueprint on how to solve the problem.

But it seems like the trolls are starting to outnumber the people that really belong here.

Especially late at night, and in the overnight hours.

Am I wrong?

1. Of course, there are trolls here - there always have been.
And I know there are more of them around as elections gear up, but longtime DUers who want Obama to be more Progressive are not in that group.

2. It depends who you mean by "trolls".
If by "trolls" you mean we long-term Democrats, people who have
worked within our state and local Democratic organizations for years,
doing the grunt work of getting Democrats elected to every job from
Dogcatcher to President, but who are now *COMPLETELY
APPALLED* at how Barack Obama and the Turd Wave Democrats
have sold out the ideals of our Party, then yes, you're wrong. We
aren't trolls and we haven't multiplied, we've always been here as
the backbone of the base.

If you mean some other group, then you may be right; I don't know.

4. It is easy to tell the difference between those who are discouraged and trolls
The true tolls are as abrasive/take no prisoner attitudes in their on-line writing as they would be face to face.

10. I think referring to the Democratic President and his supporters as "turd wave" is pretty trollish.

I think the DLC (and now the Third Wave) is an effort to destroy
by the Koch Brothers and other right-leaning folks to destroy the
Democratic Party.

And right now, it looks like their efforts are succeeding.

3. There's hardly anyone on overnight. Speaking as a shift worker
Edited on Fri Aug-12-11 06:23 AM by Tunkamerica
I haven't noticed any more obvious trolls on one shift versus the other.

Though it is interesting that people who aren't happy with Obama are the only one's answering.

There seemed to be a lot of 'hit and runs' going on.

5. I'm not sure which late-night trolls to which you are
Edited on Fri Aug-12-11 06:22 AM by Le Taz Hot
referring. Are these the people who are less-than-complimentary towards Obama? And if one is here "late at night" or "overnight hours" one is especially suspect? I need some clarification here.

Define "trolls." Let's start with that as my definition might possibly be quite different than yours.

18. "trolls"
I'm sure you know quite well what the meaning of the online slang term "troll" is, so I won't bother to explain.

I didn't mention Obama, at all. I consider that to be a red herring.

Maybe I mentioned the overnight hours because that's always been my most active hours actively participating on DU.

Come to think of it, maybe the amount of troll activity late at night has always been about the same. For whatever reason, the legitimate discussion traffic in the late-night hours seems to have declined significantly, so the trolls just stick out more.

7. Hit and run?
I'd think possible flamebait like this would be a motive to stay and defend your position.

17. I think I went out of my way to avoid posting "flamebait"
Edited on Sat Aug-13-11 05:11 AM by Syrinx
And I haven't gone anywhere at all. I'm still here. I simply went to bed after the post, and only now thought to check back.

I don't think I said anything that needs "defending." I simply offered an observation, and asked if I was wrong.

EDIT: And you really think a FOUR-MINUTE delay in answering indicates a "hit-and-run" thread? Really?

13. i have noticed more rw dogma being offered as acceptable
here lately. some of it is egregious. however, disagreeing with or criticizing our government is not, in and of itself, trollish behavior. as much as i want dems in congress to stand up for what's right by long-held dem standards, i don't want lemmings leading me. that's what the rw does.

19. I'm all for criticizing the government, I do it everyday
But when I see someone who makes one of their first original posts, and it's the tired old right-wing talking point about how rich liberals should just write a check to the treasury, instead of urging higher tax rates on the wealthy, I think that person is most likely a right-wing troll.
