The competing arguments used to explain the [London] riots
"Many theories have been posited about the underlying causes of the riots in England - from moral decay to excessive consumerism. Here two criminologists give their views on some of the arguments."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14483149

The list includes ten theories (including the weird "lack of fathers" idea) that have been used to explain the riots - some interesting stuff.

As a side note, I was surprised to read the number of police shootings has been fewer than 10 for the last few years, made me very aware about how common they are in the US.

1. I find this very interesting because, if you think about it, nearly any theory can be applied:
...depending upon what value one wants to highlight or promote.

The "lack of fathers" theory can support a family first or anti-same-sex marriage POV, for example.

Other (including some utter bullshit) theories could include "these riots happened in part because":

--Church attendance is really low.

--Mixed race couples.

--Their socialistic health care system!!11!!

Etc., etc.
