Police: La. man decapitated disabled son, 7



A Louisiana man is accused of decapitating and dismembering his disabled 7-year-old son and leaving the boy's head near the street so the child's mother would see it — a killing that brought seasoned police officers to tears, authorities said Monday.

Jeremiah Lee Wright, 30, of Thibodaux has confessed to killing Jori Lirette, Police Chief Scott Silverii said. He said Wright was booked with first-degree murder and was held Monday in lieu of $5 million bond.

Silverii's spokesman, Detective Ricky Ross, said he does not believe Wright has an attorney.

Silverii said the motive was unclear, though Wright told police "that he'd gotten to the point where he was tired of taking care" of the boy, who had cerebral palsy and heart problems, needed a feeding tube and was in a wheelchair.

"He said when he put his head out by the side of the road it was so the mother would see it when she came by," Silverii said. He said Wright's only explanation for doing so was "just that he wanted her to feel stupid when she saw the head."

Mark Chatagnier, a friend of Wright's, told the newspaper that Wright was unemployed and that Lirette often left him to care for Jori, even when she was not working.

What a horrid thing to do to another human being. It's heartbreaking.

... one can at least understand that people become desperate and sometimes do desperate things suddenly and rashly.

However, this was in no way, shape, form or fashion a killing of mercy. It was a cold-blooded crime intended done strictly for shock value.

This wasn't a routine killing, if you can even define 'routine killing'. His actions were quite bizarre, and he's obviously not all mentally there.

The stories I've seen claim he was the mother's live-in boyfriend. Not that it changes anything, but these stories frequently involve a boyfriend who felt he got stuck with a kid who wasn't his.

I work for CPS in Louisiana (different part of the state from this story), and while this is worse than I've seen before, the "mother's boyfriend as perp" is as old as time.

She was hoarding dogs and cats and her house was so filthy that it wasn't fit for the roaches that had infested it. My question was why wasn't she charged with endangering the welfare of her 14 year old daughter, who had to move out because of the conditions. Instead, animal control told her that by law she could keep 10 of her animals. WHAT????? SMH!!!!!

I know this doesn't involve you but I was wondering if there are some laws in LA that would prevent charges from being filed against that mother.

We don't bring charges against anyone. That's the District Attorney's role.

But I will say this (based on your post, which is all I know of the case): If the conditions were that bad, we would tell her that the place needs to be cleaned up, or the child moved to a safer environment. You say the child moved out of the home, and I'll assume she moved to a safer place, so the problem has been addressed. If the mom continues to live in filth without her kids, we have no authority to do anything about it. If she wants her child to move back in with her, she'd have to work a case plan to demonstrate she can do better.

Sounds like a dodge, I know, but in reality, our job is to assure that the kids are safe... not to ensure that the parents live like we want. If the parents cannot provide a safe environment, and the child moves in with relative who can provide for her, then they have done what we would have done. This is how many of our cases are resolved. (i.e. Mom is a hopeless drug addict, so kids move in with grandparents, and have a better life.)

That explains a lot and makes sense. Although, it still breaks my heart that a mother would choose animals over her own children. :(

Boiled down to its essence. Someone posted above that the murderer should have gone for help. Help from who? The Republicans want to defund any such assistance, and they deem it as wasteful.

I can only hope that the boy didn't suffer too much.

When he was in a car accident at 17, he ended up in a coma and had severe brain trauma as well as other physical injuries. My mom has had to give many duties to my sister now, as she can't walk or completely take care of herself, but she still worries.

Most people will rise to the occasion if they have to, so it appears this idiot is just completely insane.

I can't fathom a father doing this to his own son, and leaving the son's head for the wife to find because he resented her. Just horrific. There are some sick people in this world.
