My email to Wells Fargo regarding their new $3 debit fee pilot:
FYI - I will be moving my accounts ASAP. I read about your pilot program in 5 states to charge $3 per month if a debit card is used. People don't have money to eat much less pay fees like these.
I use my debit card in lieu of carrying cash.I won't be carrying yours even if you scrap the program.
I try to be fair to financial institutions even in these times. However, moves like this which do hurt people with lower incomes disproportionately are uncalled for.
I realize my pittance being removed will not hurt you at all. However, I am not some wild-eyed raging fool who supports anarchy contrary to what you may think. I simply want you to THINK about what $3 means to people. It means a whole hell of a lot, and I know from personal experience and from my neighbors and relatives.
How much does sending you this message cost?? If it actually gets through to somebody, it would be worth paying a price. I am a lobbyist for those who can't afford this. Does that help get through or do I need a suit?

Their answer:
Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. I understand your
frustration and I apologize for any inconvenience caused. I have filed a
report with our Customer Listening Group. This group collects all
comments, ideas, and suggestions submitted to us through email, the
phone, and the Financial centers. They create a monthly report from the
data gathered and it is reviewed by our Executive Committee. The
committee determines what actions will be taken, when they will be
taken, and allocates the resources necessary to make the change. I know
it?s not the immediate change that you would like, but I can assure you
that your voice and your opinion will be heard.
**************************************************************

Meh! Gobbledygook and bureaucratic shite back. Actually I am close to being "some wild-eyed raging fool who supports anarchy." AND I no longer give financial institutions the benefit of any doubt. I assumed if a went completely off on them, they wouldn't read past the first sentence.

I wish their was some way to have it go up in flames in their hands when they do read it if they print it out. I need to find a good font to use. Does anybody know of one designed with middle fingers?

By screwing America's families -- so typical of RepubliThink. Screwing America and Americans is a Republicon Tradition.

3. I switched to a credit union after they changed to Wells Fargo. Fuck a national chain bank.

I like knowing my money is going into helping my fellow CU members finance their homes, educations, and automobiles and send their kids to college rather than going into

lobbying Congress for deregualtion
subprime mortgages
excessive CEO compensation
etc etc.

10. I deal with 2 Credit Unions and have been notified
by both that due to the recent legislation that stopped
financial institutions from charging businesses for debit
card transactions they were researching fee increases
and it is expected that they will be in place by the first of next year.

4. I agree with your sentiments.
I have a WF bank checking account and utilize the debit card exclusively for purchases, primarily gas and pharmacy expenses. We are on a fixed, limited, income, from pensions and social security and even this small fee would hurt.

20. Just because it's a credit union doesn't mean it's a good place to bank. They can just as easily
have poor customer service, fees and anti-customer policies.

7. I sent almost the same letter then found out the bank I was going to
switch to because they were next door (Sun Trust) is going to attempt the same thing. I'm going to wait it out and see what happens. If WF gets enough of these letters they made do a re-think..

12. I received a letter from SunTrust
telling me that they will be charging $5.00 per month for using the debit card unless I keep a balance of $5,000 in my checking acct. I am so sick of these friggen banks and their zillions of fees. Think I will call USAA Bank and see what they can offer me. It will take time to change all the drafts and direct deposits, but I'm so sick of this that I will do what it takes.

8. Do you really beleive they don't have canned response letters
... no one individual wrote this reponse to you without having a template approved by customer service and legal.

I work in the Compliance and Complaints department of an insurance company & don't understand why people even bother to send impassioned letters to gynormous corps anymore, much less expect a 'personalized' response back. They have letter writing software that basically inserts your name and pulls sections of 'approved text' from a list of data variables based on what the system 'sees' in your letter. They're not responding to YOU - chances are a real human may not even have READ your letter. They're covering their asses with any bureaus that might be tracking their complaint handling percentages.

9. No. I know they do.
However, on the minuscule offchance that they have a human working who actually read it, I worded it that way.
Thanks so much for your input, bless your heart.

14. I have been using my American Express card instead of a debit card.
I pay it off at the end of every month and most major retailers take American Express. This has been much easier than writing every single transaction down in the checkbook.

26. Technically it's still debt while you have the balance but my point is not everyone is as
disciplined as you when it comes to credit cards. Face it, they want their customers to rack up finance charges. There's no money to be made in debit cards.

15. Ok, any bank that has a "listening group" is too big to be a good bank.
My advice to anyone that is switching from wells fargo is to find a bank where if you have a problem that cannot get resolved, you can literally walk into the president of the bank's office and tell them about it.

Some people like credit unions, I think they're probably OK for loans but again, if it's too big that you can't speak to the head banker in charge, then it's no good.

Another way you can tell if a bank is too big is to call them up on the phone. If a live human answers, it's fair game. If it's an automated phone menu then it's no good.
