So Michelle Bachmann thinks she dictates oil prices
Edited on Fri Aug-19-11 07:32 AM by samplegirl
Promising at a rally that people would see gas for $2.00 if she were elected!
I mean really how crazy do the the acusations have to get before this woman is done?
Considering media & rightwing pundits.... Killed Howard Dean for his rally scream.

1. she probably thinks that, as president, she can kill the federal
excise tax on gasoline.

and she is too stupid to look up just how much killing that tax would lower gas prices... ask your average tea bagging idiot and they will tell you that the federal tax on a gallon of gas is at LEAST $1.50 a gallon.

The true answer is 18.4 cents per gallon.

And all the "drill baby drill and drill now" won't change the supply situation so that gas retreats to $2.00 a gallon. Of course, if you really want $2.00/gallon gasoline, all we have to do is have another severe recession / depression. Lack of demand will drive the price down. Elect Bachmann and that is a likely future... so maybe she is simply projecting ("elect me and you will get $2.00 gas AND 25% unemployment!!!")

2. The one I like is the reason she loves New Hampshire...

"What I love about New Hampshire and what we have in common is our extreme love for liberty. You're the state where the shot was heard around the world in Lexington and Concord."

The Battles of Lexington and Concord and the shot heard round the world took place in Massachusetts. ...

5. I just don't understand why media is not having a field day with
this woman. Each thing she says gets more outrageous. How bout she worked for the internal revenue because what better way to find out about the bad guys?

4. I remember when Obama was talking about gas prices during the campaign.
Edited on Fri Aug-19-11 07:50 AM by Shagbark Hickory
Then got elected and never brought them up again or did anything about them.

7. you have your facts wrong.

Obama has done what a number of other Presidents have done... not that it's terribly effective...

8. Not "not terribly effective."
Just not effective.

We still don't have an energy policy. We're still not on track for energy independence or green energy.
And he's not even talking about gas prices anymore despite it being a hot topic at the dinner table.

9. Actually, you can't say that.

We can't tell what the price of gasoline would be if the President HADN'T release oil from the SPR.

What I can tell you is that the other thing Obama did, which BUSH REFUSED TO DO, was to quit BUYING oil for the SPR when supply tightens (Bush was transferring billions of dollars to his oil industry buddies).

I say not terribly effective because the amount of oil released from the SPR wasn't significant to the market... but such releases can effectively dampen speculative futures purchases by traders because it signals a willingness to increase market supply in the short term, and most speculators operate only in the very short term (where they can affect mini bubbles or momentum swings in commodity prices and "make out like bandits").

Of course, I would rather the federal government ban speculators (maybe even arrest and execute one as warning to others).

And I would rather we borrow another $2 trillion on top of the $14 already borrowed and institute a policy of solar panels for every rooftop in the US and a subsidy for plug in hybrid or pure electric vehicle for everyone. But that's just me.

Obama has done what other president's have done, no reason to ding him on this account. In this area, he is much better than oil family / crime family Bush.

13. The government doesn't even have to do anything that radical.
Edited on Fri Aug-19-11 09:27 AM by Shagbark Hickory
They can start with environmental regulations that require there to be so many different blends of gas and emissions regulations that prevent the same engines in many of the same exact cars in westernized developed countries in every other continent on earth from being sold in the u.s.
These regulations hurt consumers and don't make the air any cleaner.

15. Bush III
Her statement is kind of what Bush said on the campaign trail, that he would "jawbone" Mid East countries to "open up the spigots" and get the price of gas down.
