Please... allow me to vent. Shared Sacrifice, my ass
Those of you who know me know I have tried to be a good Democrat.
I signed on to the Obama/Biden 2012 Campaign yesterday.
I received a certified letter from the IRS today.
I owe the IRS over $400 for 2009.
The year I began my decent into Hell.
The year I went on Long-Term Disability.
The year I paid over 12K of my income in Taxes.
The year I withdrew my retireement to pay my rent.
...Now, let's talk about shared sacrifice, shall we?
These are the things you need to deal with,Mr. President.
I want BADLY to support you.

end of rant.I feel better.

When he says "shared sacrifices," he is saying that to the republicans regarding their refusal to increase taxes on the rich.

12. Why the obsession with sacrifice?
This is a bountiful country with enormous productive capacity, massive natural resources, decent infrastructure.

The rich have never been richer. It's time for the rest of the country to start sharing in that prosperity.

5. the IRS is very quietly going after the middle class and poor to make up
for the tax cuts to billionaires. You're not the first person I've heard that has gotten the dreaded *letter*.

Blood From a Turnip -- so the elites can dine on lobster in Martha's Vineyard.... :grr:

7. They tried to claim my savings account as "income" -ALL of it.
The CPA I went to said LOTS of people have been getting "demand" letters from IRS, that often people send money just to shut the IRS up even if in fact there are no taxes owned.
And that often the amounts demanded were small enough that it was cheaper than hiring a CPA.
Cost me 100.00 to have CPAs send IRS a letter in reply, telling them there is , of course, no merit to their claims.
Never heard from them again about that.

8. this doesn't work
an audit by the IRS has to yield significant money to even pay for itself. This is always the problem with going after small time waste fraud and abuse. A small amount of cheating is simple not worth the effort to try to correct since the money to fix it costs more. You are a net $ loser in the end. This is why before Cheney changed the IRS directive they tended to focus on large scale fraud. They have a much higher probability to have a net return on the tax payers $. More to the point large scale fraud is the most likely to hurt society at large.

9. it may not *work* - but it's what is happening
I know several people in my area that are getting these *demand* letters. All of them have gone through hell, losing jobs, running through retirement funds -- and then THIS?

You'll never hear them admit to this - but it IS happening.

6. Precisely. Businesses can deduct certain expenses and types of losses.
But people can't. Makes no sense to me.
