The message: MASS EVICTION DEFENSE WORKS! (100 supporters showed up to defend 82 year old Ms Ward)
Edited on Sat Aug-20-11 04:09 PM by Omaha Steve

An 82-year-old Bedford-Stuyvesant great grandmother fights to keep her home of 44 years, after she entrusted it to predatory lenders.

What Valery Jean (of FUREE) shared this with
me yesterday (Friday, August 19, 2011) via email.

FORWARD . There are VIDEO links, too! (scroll down). Thanks!

"Here are the latest updates as per Take Back the Land's website which includes information on the action on Monday :

UPDATE: (12:30PM EST) In a deal worked out with New York State Assemblywoman Annette Robinson, Mary Lee Ward has won a two week stay of eviction while parties negotiate over her ability to stay in the home.

While this IS NOT OVER, it is a huge victory for Ms. Ward, O4O and their allies and the entire fight for the human right to housing.

The message: MASS EVICTION DEFENSE WORKS!

UPDATE 2: The next action is on Monday, August 22 at 12 noon at the offices of the speculator developer who bought the home under the feet of Ms. Ward. The location is 1168 Fulton St. (between Franklin Ave. and Dean St.), offices of Shameen Chowdury. Please come out if you can.

Over 100 supporters showed up to defend 82 year old Mary Lee Ward from eviction and that show of force has led police to call off the eviction and for New York State Assemblywoman Annette Robinson to step in and host negotiations.

1. I'm older, and I get these offers to fix or refinance my house.
One of them uses Obama's name in their ID on the phone although I'm pretty sure they have nothing to do with Obama.

There is a really nasty bunch out there who aim to get seniors' to agree to things no sane person would ever go along with. I think they figure seniors are often vulnerable and sometimes confused and forgetful so they can take advantage. It's a terrible thing.

2. what a country. She owned her home for 44 years
is 82 years old and they are going to evict her. This would not happen in Norway eg, or in Iceland.

Good for all those who are helping her. I hope she succeeds and gets to stay in her home. But at this stage in her life, the stress she is under has to have an effect on her.

3. I forgot the link there is plenty more

In the meantime, Ms. Ward refuses to leave. An iron fence and chicken wire—an imagined security blanket of sorts—surround the outside of the house at 320 Tompkins Avenue. She says that, after all this time, she still cannot understand what she did wrong, and they will have to “carry me out on a stretcher before I leave my home.”
