Qaddafi and Two Sons Rumored To Have Fled Libya
Tension have been mounting in Libya today, with rebel forces encircling Tripoli, causing Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi to lose his grip, according to the New York Times. "By Saturday afternoon, the rebels had driven Colonel Qaddafi’s forces out of the strategic oil refinery town of Zawiyah, 30 miles west of Tripoli. After a week of heavy fighting there, residents began to celebrate in the main square." Although, in Tripoli, still a Qaddafi stronghold, government officials "continued to insist that they would fight to the end," the Times wrote that "rumors swept Libya that was preparing to flee, if he had not already."

Update: Top rebel commander in west can NOT confirm Qaddafi has left, according to Engel.

Things will be really shaky for a while, so any of these reports, take with the proverbial grain of cesium...

3. When they secure the city and palace and they don't find him
or when they catch him and I doubt they will catch him alive.

Gruesome, yes...

9. When he gets his own reality program on teevee!
Edited on Sat Aug-20-11 11:54 PM by Major Hogwash
Naturally.

Khadaffi will be on Faux and Friends, on Faux Snooze that first morning so he can complain about how ill-treated he was by President Obama.
Steve Douchey will say that it was nice of him to drop by and talk with them at their studio.
Brian Kilmeade will probably offer to be his driver and drive him around town for free.
Gretchen will cross her legs several times and flash the camera.

13. Gaddafi probably not in Tripoli at the moment--activist
From AJE's live blog:

Gaddafi is probably not in Tripoli at the moment, Bashir Sewehli, a Libyan activist, tells us here in the studio.

"He's not that stupid," Sewehli said.

Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi's most prominent son, gave a speech on state television overnight, and Sewehli said it's unclear where he might be.

Sewehli said there have been "intense negotiations" between Gaddafi and Western forces to arrange his departure from Libya.

15. It's kind of familiar, isn't it?
There often is a lot of information flowing, but much of it is unconfirmed. Syria is another good example right now.

18. Another excellent source on Libya/Arab Spring is The Guardian's live blog
Unfortunately, it's staffed on weekdays only--and usually just from morning until evening (Libya time).

The staff there is very impressive, and they post everything from media reports and info from activists to tweets from correspondents for various media sources.

I've seen them keep the blog open a little later for breaking news, and once I saw them re-open it after putting it to bed--but that's very rare.

The top of each OP in the Libyan Revolution threads has this and an assortment of other handy links.

21. Don't know about Qaddafi fleeing but ...
via al Jazeera
Ex-Gaddafi top aide flees Libya
Tunisia's official TAP news agency has said that a former top aide of embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has left the island of Djerba for Italy after apparently defecting.

Abdessalam Jalloud's flight took off from the Djerba airport early on Saturday, the report said, without providing any details.

Rebel spokesman Mahmoud Shammam said that Jalloud had fled to a rebel-held area in the western mountains and was on his way to Europe.

Libyan fighting reaches streets of Tripoli
Sustained automatic gunfire and a series of explosions rang out in Tripoli overnight as rebels launched efforts to permanantly free the Libyan capital from Muammar Gaddafi's grasp, according to reports from witnesses and rebels.

Blasts and gunfire rocked the city after sunset on Saturday, and witnesses reported street protests and fighting in the eastern neighbourhoods of Souq al-Jomaa and Tajoura. Beginning at around 9pm local time, residents also took to the streets in the Fashloum, Fournaj, Sabah, Ghoud al-Shayal, Hanshir and Dahra areas, many of them emerging from mosques and chanting "God is great".

Expatriate Libyans speaking to family members in the capital said their relatives described men going out to protest, some with weapons, while children and women were asked to stay home. Meanwhile, NATO aircraft reportedly carried out bombing raids after nightfall.

For those of you able to see it, here is al Jazeera's live blog
